Abstract, like arranging not to bleed out in an emergency room instead of living to have more children, and that's PUTTING ASIDE the apparently abstract life arrangements of needing to complete an education, or separate from an abusive spouse, or avoid being impoverished.

Right? A dozen or more per cookie sheet depending on size. I might have made my (based on Rachel Ray of all people) chewy gingersnaps with dark chocolate chunks, but plain Tollhouse off the bag recipe are amazing, no fancy chemistry to get the perfect texture required.

Her terribleness long predates the internet.

It's like these people have never heard of slash. Maybe they haven't. Or maybe they think women enjoying M/M is deviant or something.

That said I worked with so many programmers who respected humanities people and appreciated what writers do, and many had a lot of different intellectual interests and were fascinating to talk to. The stereotypical robot guys were rare. The tedious biz-speak bros on the other hand. . .

I guess it's better than lying about it? They really should not let programmers manage writers though unless they can articulate what we actually do. i.e. not writing down their beautiful thoughts that they don't have time to write (BUT THEY COULD) and adding some commas.

My husband read the article and learned that the magic lemur-virtuoso technique was opening their mouths more at higher pitches. I guess that's an opera technique in the same way "stretch first" is a marathon running technique? I was hoping lemurs had the secret to a flawless passagio or something.

I'll have to read it again. I remember enjoying the talky middle parts more than the action, but it's been a good while.

I would looooooove to see an adaptation of Man and Wife, especially the insane ranting about how college sports will destroy a young man's health and sanity.

I can't evaluate the biochem angle but sugar replacing fat resulted in so many disgusting foods. "Hey what if we made zero-fat ranch dressing and replaced all the fat with corn syrup." "Hey what if cookies were held together with. . . something."

Isn't streaming supposed to a) infinitely expand the array of listening choices and b) promote things adjacent what we're already interested in? Doesn't this make "you should have heard about this one person in this one genre" ridiculous? I have to look up all the Oscar red carpet people too.

Ph.D. programs already were shrinking 20 years ago! I guess there's always eliminating all of them. Of course in English this let universities hire adjunct professors as composition teachers instead of grad students, since the former were paid even less.

I don't think dates are USELESS, because I had a lot of students who couldn't tell you whether anything happened in between Shakespeare and Dickens (both basically the dark ages before anyone discovered gender or sarcasm) but lists of Important Dates are pretty pointless.

It's giving me strong vibes of the 60s male credo of "The position of women in the Movement is in on their backs." Like "we're changing the world and if you question our sexual politics you're a buzzkill trying to bring us down." Except WAY more money and influence behind it.

The toadies probably got into government in part because of the power flex of inhabiting the beautiful buildings, at the cost of having the inspiring symbols defaced and belittled. I hope some of them feel ripped off that they sold their souls only to be the viziers of ugly America.

Yeah I always hear about how ordinary it is to feel invincible and bound for greatness as an 18-year-old and absolutely not. I think everyone in my family including me was surprised when I happened into a well-paying career.

Real question is why this bothers anyone. There was a hilarious thread here or Twitter of people describing the Irish tradition of utterly withering sartorial put-downs along the lines of asking you why you're dressed as Cookie Monster and "come from a wedding?" doesn't even register.

But you're right, it takes practice. And while everyone hates it, politicians still need to be good at this.

Still it was such a softball! She didn't have to explain it, just nod her head sagely, say something banal about how important US foreign policy is to global stability, and how she wasn't an expert on this area so would defer to Rubio. THEN the troops thing if she wanted.

Literally people pay for workshops on how to birth unassisted. I'm guessing, being white and privileged, but I bet black moms are not as profitable a market segment. Some of this is true believers being cult-y, but as with autism parents there is so much $$ in selling alternatives to the anxious.

There ARE too many c-sections and too much dismissal of women's concerns. There is also a hell of a lot of money going into convincing white women they're doing it wrong if they accept what the medical establishment tells them and giving up control of birth.

There's a consumerist angle that intersects--health care as menu choice. Plus an additional intersection between both right-wing Christian and left-wing hippie framing of motherhood as fully natural. Ricki Lake did a whole documentary on natural childbirth.

Next day or two depending on exhaustion level and arrival time. Meds and toiletries and phone charger quickly because I need them, clothes later at some point when a cat isn't sitting on the suitcase.

They want a return to a) children getting married with parental "consent," often meaning coercion, often to much older men, b) pregnant teens being forced to marry their impregnators or be publicly shamed and unable to support themselves, and c)more maternity homes outputting babies for adoption.

Portland OR doesn't seem to have any appts before 9/21, and I read somewhere you currently need a prescription (which will probably change, happened before). But we were able to schedule for 9/10 in Vancouver WA.

Probably no one else cares, but the opening scene of "Waitress" where Sara Bareilles is singing "flour, sugar, butter" and stirring those ingredients repeatedly in a bowl with a spoon bears no resemblance to the actual making of pie crust.

Handwavily almost every classic book written by a man between 1930 and 1970. Truly a bleak era.

Which is not to say that these people or analytic philosophers were/are idiots or that our racist jerk here isn't, but to agree with Kevin that it's a rookie error to think you're the expert on how other fields should conduct scholarship.

UNC specializes in analytic philosophy, which is pretty logic-forward, and as an English grad student I recall being at some parties with philosophy students who found literature studies absolutely baffling. They thought we should have permanent and verifiably objective standards of proof.

They see books as status objects and containers for messaging. Makes for some terrible teaching.
