Ken Paxton is the worst state Attorney General in the United States. All opinions my own, and have no relation to my employer.

A tree that took 250 years to grow getting cut down by Donald's jackbooted thugs in minutes is the type of on-the-nose symbolism that would have a writer panned by critics as a hack.

Perfect example though of how corrupting tariffs are. Every town & business becomes dependent on little tariff carve outs, meaning that buying influence with Senators becomes mandatory to stay in business. The tariff is the mother of trusts!!!

Simone Weil hit on something similar: "Imaginary evil is romantic and varied; real evil is gloomy, monotonous, barren, boring. Imaginary good is boring; real good is always new, marvelous, intoxicating."

the letter in which she writes this is copyrighted but here's the key quote...
“You are quite right, I changed my mind and do no longer speak of “radical evil.” … It is indeed my opinion now that evil is never “radical,” that it is only extreme, and that it possesses neither depth nor any demonic dimension. It can overgrow and lay waste the whole world precisely because it spreads like a fungus on the surface. It is “thought-defying,” as I said, because thought tries to reach some depth, to go to the roots, and the moment it concerns itself with evil, it is frustrated because there is nothing. That is its “banality.” Only the good has depth that can be radical.

of course he will never do that, republicans will never do that, their whole project is to return us to the state of inequality, to the "white man's republic" they wank themselves to sleep over but nevertheless: these kinds of flagrant acts of contempt for americans are, themselves, impeachable.

but even setting all the rest of it aside, i think bouie is right to focus on the mere act of slurring trans people. the role of public servants--especially but not restricted to high public servants, entrusted with the highest and most powerful offices--is that they are not just bureaucrats.

bouie is right to note that hegseth's bizarre reference to "beardos" should be understood as a reference to black people; you might also argue that his obsession with testosterone is an attack on women all of which are borne out by the anti-trans, anti-black, anti-woman purges he's engaged in

Like I absolutely think that, in my hypo of the purely symbolic white supremacy resolution, you should be able to sue and get some kind of official judicial declaration to the effect that "no it is not the official policy of South Carolina that the white race is superior, it cannot lawfully be"

We don't ever really focus on this point, but of course a resolution passed by the South Carolina legislature (say) declaring the white race to be superior would violate the Equal Protection Clause Hegseth saying slurs is basically the same thing

I don’t think this is quite true; there are a small handful of somehow extremely competent absolute monarchs, and a smaller handful that didn’t have their stupid kids blow it up. It’s just that the current record is 125 years, and that required a crazy string of luck. bsky.app/profile/john...

The line Niebuhr has in the intro to “The Children of Light and The Children of Darkness”, “man’s capacity for evil makes democracy necessary”, is true largely due to the fact that anyone who thinks they can wield supreme power is assuredly so stupid that they will blow their society apart with it

Honestly; flipping Texas is the real crucial point for turning this around. We can’t do anything about uncooperative coalition partners without the ability to really threaten to ignore them. People have been talking about the Sun Belt like this for decades, but it’s real and it’s happening, so.

We should absolutely expand it to all hires though. Basically every cop in a local PD who does something awful was employed in like five police departments previously and he had a record of abuse in all of them.

Probably easier to keep track of them if McCulloch hadn't destroyed the chain of command by getting three commanders of one part of the army killed in quick succession, and then the fourth guy in line got lost in the woods.

This of course raises the question; if Benjamin McCulloch did it first, is Pete Hegseth actually doing Benjamin McCulloch shit? (Genuinely, one of the times I was most ashamed of my state was when I learned that Ben McCulloch was from Texas. I hate that clown.)

Pseud O’Nym ♨️ @pseud0nym.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I'd argue that Van Dorn was actually a good commander (Holly Springs basically saved Vicksburg for six months), and I'd specifically say that it was actually Benjamin McCulloch who fumbled the bag by doing Pete Hegseth shit (if you are commanding an army, you cannot be your own scout).
