First, with a focus on indigenous, UK languages, Professor Robert Dunbar spoke about identity and the Gaelic language, which was followed by Welsh singer and musician, Mared Williams, who shared three, moving songs in Welsh. It was also fascinating to watch the live interpretation of these Welsh language songs into BSL.Turning to the wider multilingualism of the UK, we heard from Professor Devyani Sharma, who shared data from interviews with Indian and British Indian participants, drawing attention to their skillful switching between languages, varieties, registers, and more. This was followed by South African storyteller, Nomakhwezi Becker, who wove a tale of language, identity, and belonging through the fabric of German, isiZulu, isiXhosa, and English.A final pairing was Professor Bencie Woll, who spoke not only about British Sign Language, but about a wider Deaf community that connect across and beyond international and linguistic borders. Finally, we were treated to two poems from Zoë McWhinney, a BSL poet, who brought her poems to life via the art form of Visual Vernacular.

40. Cadavre Exquis goes gibberish: wild stories with Nobel words
Booth iconGet ready to let unfamiliar languages spark your imagination! At this meeting of Nobel Prize laureates, you will get to experiment with original literary quotes from around the world. Do these words seem strange? That is exactly where the fun begins – as we play with the bits that catch our ear; letter patterns and sound echoes that spark surprising connections. If you are ready to experiment, we invite you to weave these clues into a narrative, one sentence at a time – while every twist and turn of the story unfolds on the screen. As sentences begin to hop from one language to another, words from everywhere will send creativity spinning into ever wilder twists. Curious? Come discover the link between surreal(ist) word adventures and the creative power that lies in our curiosity for other languages!
