(Groningen University) “Almost forty years after the emergence of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and two decades after the first Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines (CADAAD) conference, Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) continues to evolve in response to changing social realities, theoretical developments and methodological innovations. This roundtable offers an opportunity to reflect on some of the key tensions, challenges and opportunities that currently shape the field and, in doing so, to consider how CDS can continue to respond to an increasingly complex communicative landscape. At the heart of these reflections lies a series of old dichotomies that continue to inform both research and debate within CDS. One concerns the very nature of the field itself: whether CDS is best understood as a theoretical framework, an analytical approach, a methodology or some combination of these. This question is closely linked to broader discussions about the continuing relevance of established CDA traditions for analysing contemporary forms of communication and the need to move beyond predominantly Western and European perspectives in order to engage more fully with diverse epistemologies and social realities. These conceptual concerns are inseparable from methodological debates surrounding the relationship between qualitative and quantitative approaches. [...]”“[...] The growing use of corpus-assisted and computational methods has renewed discussions about methodological rigour, interpretation, researcher bias and triangulation, which raises questions about how critical discourse research can balance empirical robustness with contextual sensitivity and critical insight. Underlying both theoretical and methodological discussions is the persistent tension between positionality and objectivity. Questions of researcher responsibility, the study of vulnerable communities, the ethics of analysing harmful discourses and the place of activism within scholarship continue to challenge the field. At stake is not only how power is examined through discourse, but also how critical research may itself reproduce, negotiate or contest existing power relations while remaining reflexive about its own assumptions and limitations. These issues become particularly pressing in light of wider social and academic transformations. The need to engage with audiences beyond academia, the challenges posed by the marketisation and colonisation of higher education, and the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence all open up important debates concerning the future role of CDS. Rather than seeking definitive answers, this roundtable aims to encourage dialogue on how the field can continue to address emerging forms of inequality, power and social change while remaining responsive to the evolving conditions of contemporary communication.”

Whose Voices Count? Using Corpora to Examine Trans Representation and Quotation Practices in the British Press between 2020 and 2025

(Manchester Metropolitan University)In May 2026, the UK Equalities and Human Rights Commission issued new guidance on the use of “single-sex spaces”, advocating a narrow and problematic definition of biological sex rather than gender identity. This guidance reflects a broader trend of legislation and institutional practices that increasingly restrict and undermine the rights of transgender people. Across the UK (and, indeed in comparable contexts), the media — and the financial networks supporting anti-trans campaigns — have played a central role in legitimising anti-trans discourse and contributing to the erosion of trans rights. Drawing on research conducted in collaboration with Amnesty International, this paper examines representations of trans people in four major British newspapers (The Sun, The Times, The Guardian, and The Telegraph) on a month-by-month basis between January 2020 and April 2025. Building on previous work on trans representation in the British press (e.g. Baker, 2014; Gupta, 2019; Zottola, 2021), this study traces the development and circulation of anti-trans ideologies over time, while also exploring how corpus linguistic research can inform the work of organisations such as Amnesty International. I demonstrate that reporting on trans people increased substantially across all publications during this period. However, this coverage consistently privileged the voices of politicians and anti-trans campaigners, while marginalising trans people and trans-rights advocacy groups. Corpus linguistic analysis further reveals that only two trans individuals are regularly named in reporting: a murdered teenage trans girl and a convicted felon. Alongside this, I identify growing frequencies of terms such as “gender critical” and “sex matters”, and examine how these labels function discursively to legitimise anti-trans actors and uncritically platform anti-trans hate groups. Ultimately, I identify a pattern whereby anti-trans voices are platformed, while those of trans people are silenced. 

The paper situates these findings within the growing field of Trans linguistics (see Zimman, 2020; Zimman and Hayworth, 2020), while asking a broader methodological and ethical question: how can researchers centre trans voices when the data itself systematically excludes them?

Resisting the Imperative to Forgive: Standing, Agency, and Reintegration in Post-Digital Publics 

Pilar Garcés-Conejos Blitvich  
(University of North Carolina at Charlotte)This talk addresses a gap in critical discourse studies by developing a technosocial account of forgiveness and reintegration after cancelation. I argue that normative and critical philosophical models, while useful for explaining some of the dynamics of forgiveness, are insufficient for understanding post-digital moral repair. These traditions typically presuppose identifiable victims, offenders, and shared moral systems, while leaving digital architecture outside their conceptualizations. By contrast, cancelation involves diffuse victims, contested wrongdoers, and transient light groups, while platform affordances such as persistence, replicability, scalability, and searchability, along with algorithmically amplified outrage, structurally reward condemnation and inhibit reconciliation. In this context, forgiveness becomes a counter-algorithmic practice.To tackle this problem, the study turns to first-order perspectives, asking how social actors themselves theorize, negotiate, grant, and withhold forgiveness. Drawing on a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of forgiveness-related commentary following cancelation in The New York Times and Reddit, the study codes meta-illocutionary expressions across multiple dimensions. The findings show that counter-forgiveness discourse and stringent conditions dominate, while refusal to forgive is often moralized as justice. Forgiveness, therefore, emerges as a public, ideological, and power-laden practice through which moral authority, victimhood, accountability, punishment, and reintegration are negotiated. More broadly, the analysis shows that the aftermath of cancelation functions as a prolonged site of moral negotiation that produces an unstable moral afterlife, or what I call framed continuity: a condition in which wrongdoers may fulfill the expected requirements of forgiveness, acknowledgment, apology, and repair, yet remain indefinitely tethered to scandal through the persistence of the digital record.
