#OnThisDay 1066 William the Conqueror set sail for England. It was only 48 hours after the Battle of Stamford Bridge, so he and his army embarked with no idea which opponent they would have to fight.

A graphic has a call for papers for a session on "The Normans in 2027" for a 2027 ICMS panel sponsored by the Haskins Society. There is a photo showing the British Museum's digital projection of the Bayeux Tapestry onto the White Cliffs of Dover in 2027, overlaid on a detail from a medieval manuscript.

2027 will be the year of the Normans. Many events have been developed to celebrate this anniversary, including exhibiting the Bayeux Tapestry in London for the first time. This millennial celebration provides an ideal opportunity to evaluate the Normans. Charles Homer Haskins was foundational in what we think about the Normans. How has our understanding of the Normans changed or evolved since Haskins’ time? What has remained consistent? What new methodologies have been employed? What areas have been examined that Haskins didn’t consider?

Not many people know this, but Wat Tyler was the son of William Wallace & Edward II’s wife, Isabella of France (see Braveheart), and Tyler had a child with a wealthy heiress from Nottinghamshire. Their son is the person we know as Robin Hood. In other words, Robin Hood is William Wallace’s grandson.

My heart is heavy that we are making a collective miscalculation in undervaluing the humanities - from my FT piece www.ft.com/content/fbde...
Thinking is hard. Reflection is hard. Perhaps we will persist with our collective miscalculation and ignore all that philosophy, literature, classics and history have to offer us. The humanities have a word for this: tragedy.

CfP:
Manuscripts, History, Rulers and Popes:
Sessions in Memory of Rosamond McKitterick
Leeds IMC, 5-8 July 2027

This set of sessions at the IMC in 2027 honours Rosamond McKitterick (1949–2026) and her work through the lens of four of her monographs: The Carolingians and the Written Word (1989), History and Memory in the Carolingian World (2004), Charlemagne (2008) and Rome and the Invention of the Papacy (2020).
We invite papers that engage with the themes Rosamond McKitterick explored in these books, including early medieval manuscript culture, the role of history-writing in shaping Frankish memory and community, early medieval Frankish rulership and the history of the early medieval papacy.
Talks should be 15-20 minutes long and can be delivered either in person or online.
Please send an abstract of no more than 200 words, along with a title, by 20 August 2026, to
