Before calling someone a “dirtbag,” the Senator should have had his facts straight. An apology is in order. Glad one of us knew the difference between the Atlanta Hawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes!

37 more wounded troops. Added quietly. No explanation. Here's the No B.S. truth: when anyone (a vendor, a CEO, a government) revises the numbers without telling you why, the silence IS the message. 861 wounded. Their families deserve the full story.

5/ . . . except that it was bad. The damage done to Black kids in PS 307 was certainly real, but it isn't about money, it is about confronting the failure of a large, unionized school system. That is what the article really needed. Not a lament, but a correct diagnosis. It wasn't.

4/ That school is poorly led (she made that clear), but it isn't resources - alone. Yes, more money might help, but at the very top end of the $/student level, the effect would be trivial. There was absolutely no interrogation of the questions about organization or management of the school . . .

3/ She just couldn't come to grips with it (though there were early hints about leadership quality). Something is making it hard to recruit and retain (and fire) staff, maintain order and discipline and craft a good learning environment. It ain't money, and its not race.

Michael Hicks @profhicks.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
2/ While I value the perspective on race, it was selective. New York's PS 307 is not under resourced. In fact, the spending per pupil would rival most US universities, and is more than almost any of the top 100 public high schools in the USA. There's something else going on.

1/ I admire @nhannahjones.bsky.social piece in the @nytimes.com and especially admire her decision to live out her conscience in a direct way. Hypocrisy would've been much less inconvenient. But, I am also a bit shocked about the focus of, and facts about the school (PS 307).
