October Country by Ray Bradbury. (for @tomsbrown.bsky.social & all others who love this month)
OCTOBER COUNTRY
... that country where it is always turning late in the year. That country where the hills are fog and the rivers are mist; where noons go quickly, dusks and twilights linger, and midnights stay. That country composed in the main of cellars, sub-cellars, coal-bins, closets, attics, and pantries faced away from the sun.
That country whose people are autumn people, thinking only autumn thoughts. Whose people passing at night on the empty walks sound like rain....

We haven’t had rain for so long now in my part of Dorset. I have reached that point where I think rain is the stuff of myth. Old poem about no rain.
Drought Comes To Langton Herring

We sit in bleached fields, the sun
has turned the ground into
a smashed pot, terracotta pieces
as far as the eye can see.

Everything is desiccated;
we are husks, brittle-skinned,
a rub of the hands reduces us
to dust.

Weeks pass, some of us burn,
dried by lack of rain, ignited by
relentless light and pounding heat.

In the far north, the ice melts.
Soon we will drown.

Blodeuwedd Hours too soon a barn owl broke from woodshadow. Her white face rose out of darkness in a buttercup field. Colourless and soundless, feathers cream as meadowsweet and oakflowers... Her night lament beyond conversation, the owl follows her shadow like a cross over the fields #BookWormSat
✍🏻 Born in Cardiff, Gillian Clarke was National Poet of Wales 2008-2016.
In ancient Welsh myth, Blodeuwedd was, much like Eve, created by magic for the satisfaction of a man. However, her heart, desire and will were bent towards another. For this sin of freeing herself from something imposed upon her, the maiden made from flowers is turned into an owl, a night haunter deprived of human company but returned to her element of the more than human
