Dennis Pikes was born in 1932 in Herefordshire and served with the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. He completed a long and arduous tour in Korea from 1951 to 1952, patrolling the front line and facing intense conditions.

Welsh artist Gwen John was born today (22 June) in 1876 in Haverfordwest. She liked painting women & cats—sometimes both together. This is "Young Woman Holding a Black Cat" (c.1918–22, Tate), one of several versions featuring the same unnamed model. The cat is also unnamed. #art #wales

In November 1895, a team of “lady footballers” completed their South Wales tour by holding a match at the Pillgwenlly Football Club ground. The teams were dresses in red/white and blue/white blouses with blue ‘knickerbockers.’ @sportingheritage.bsky.social #SportsAndFashion

The colliery was opened in 1887 by the Albion Steam Coal Company. It was later owned by the Powell Duffryn Company before passing into the hands of the National Coal Board in 1947. The pit closed in 1966. Photo: Pontypridd Museum bit.ly/AlbionCollie...

The Albion Colliery at Cilfynydd, near Pontypridd, was the scene of one of the worst mining disasters in Britain. On 23 June 1894 a massive explosion killed 281 men and boys. A further explosion on 10 November 1906 killed six men.

Dec 1941: HMS Prince of Wales was sunk by Japanese aircraft near Malaya. 1200 lives lost. John survived, spending 1.5 hours in shark-infested waters. His family didn’t know for months if he’d made it. #WW2

John joined HMS Prince of Wales at the start of WW2. In August 1941, he witnessed the secret Atlantic Charter meeting between Churchill and Roosevelt, which set out the Allied aims for the war and peace. #WW2

#OnThisDay 1900 Barry Railway labourer E March was injured at Ewenny Quarry, nr #Bridgend, #Glamorgan, #Wales. Feeding a stone crusher, he got his finger caught between 2 stones & slightly bruised. Paid 5 1/2d per hour (c.£3.20 now), he was off work for 1 day. #Railway200
