Ray Bradbury - legendary author of Fahrenheit 451 & The Martian Chronicles - was born today (Aug 22) in 1920. This is "The Halloween Tree", painted by Bradbury for his daughters in 1964. Years later, it inspired his classic Halloween book and animated special of the same name. 🎃🍂

🐙 H.P. Lovecraft, the writer who helped define cosmic horror, was born on 20 August 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island. This life-sized bronze statue was created by local artist Gage Prentiss in 2019 and commissioned by fans. It still awaits a permanent home in Providence.

Dic Penderyn (Richard Lewis) - "Wales' first working-class martyr" - was hanged today in 1831 for his supposed role in the Merthyr Rising riots. His final words were "O Arglwydd, dyma gamwedd" (Oh Lord, here is iniquity). This is his final resting place in St Mary's, Port Talbot.

John Dee -mathematician, occultist & “magician” to Queen Elizabeth I- was born on this day in 1527. This gothic illustration (Necromancy, c1825) shows Dee & Edward Kelley "raising the Ghost of a Person lately deceased, in the Church Yard of Walton-le-dale, Lancaster." As you do.
