Letter from ‘A.B.’ to John Richards at Beaumaris mentions the controversy over the punishment of the chief leaders of the Jacobite Rebellion, and the romantic escape of Lord Nithsdale. BHILL/6785 1716

“Lord Nithsdale was to have suffered on Friday last made his escape over night in a Riding Hood which his Lady brought in on purpose. So now we call a woman’s riding hood a Nithsdale”

This letter refers to William Maxwell, 5th Earl of Nithsdale, a Scottish Catholic who took part in the Jacobite rising of 1715. He was captured and sent to London, tried and found guilty of treason and sentenced to death in the Tower of London. On hearing of his arrest, his wife Winifred travelled to London and hatched a cunning plan to rescue him. The night before he was to be executed, she was admitted with two of her maids into his room. he exchanged clothes with one of the maids and managed to make good his escape fleeing to France.

#otd 160 years ago the Mimosa landed at Porth Madryn, Patagonia. The ship had set off on 28th of May from Liverpool with 153 passengers. Here we have the notebook of Edwyn C. Roberts, a passenger on the ship, who documented the 2 month journey to the new Welsh colony . BMSS/759

P.18 And there she is the much-anticipated long ship, the Mimosa, beginning her journey through the docks towards the river and at the centre of her main mast the red dragon banner.

about two o clock in the afternoon in the middle of the rolling sea we went quite ill, as did everyone else

on the evening of the 9th of June the 12 year old daughter of Mr Robert Thomas and wife of Bangor died, and she was cast into the sea in a small coffin.

p.21 We saw Madeira Islands…Tenerife…Canary islands, we saw various large fish caught and flying fish

P.22 a number of the boys went swimming on the 21st by tying a huge rope down the side of the ship reaching down to the water
