A society of people in massive debt (or unable to save money) in a world where wages are low while costs are skyrocketing. Couple that with it being illegal to be homeless, you’ve got a draft kings to prison pipeline, baby. God bless the USA

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Botched US execution prompts global calls to scrap death penalty
Robin Maher, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, told the New York Times: 'This event is the worst we've seen and unlike any other botched execution in the modern era.'

The tortuous, botched execution of Christa Pike is truly horrifying. And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

Literally my first thought the day before the execution was scheduled and it was on the news I thought "they're gonna fuck this up and this woman is going to suffer horribly" bc lethal injection is entirely insane and has a horrendous track record.

Fiiiiinally got a hang on how the fefw overworld map and turns work and now I'm rlly getting into the gameplay loop. I still find it kind of unintuitive that you just sort of... teleport to the capital whenever the main quest arrives on the calendar, but there's not really a graceful solution there.

money isn't even the primary sunk cost here, we have repeatedly experienced financial crashes to various degrees of catastrophe. LLM's have catalyzed a total loss of human ability that has been subsidized to computer programs, and when those program disappear, which they will, people will simply know less than they did before. it will be like the obsolescence of antiquated tech where no one alive knows how to work it, but in real time. it's going to fucking destroy us for the opposite reasons of advertised.

A neat feature of some of these Medicare cuts is that emergency rooms are now nursing homes for people that no longer have insurance. They just sit there for days and days. Too sick to go home but not sick enough to admit.

A thing we don’t handle very well is punishing corporations. Something like this should trigger a review where the owner/board has to make the case to the government that the company should not be essentially nationalized with no compensation paid to owners. Fines are simply insufficient.
