These idiots are going to get someone killed. From the sound of it there might be enough to prosecute here. The idea of boats having to turn off AIS, which these days is a vital safety system, and weilding knives around inflatables with people in.... The authorities cannot let this roll on.

5. After around 30 hours at sea, the dinghy was intercepted by the RNLI and those on board transferred to two lifeboats. Two lifeboat personnel tried to secure the empty dinghy. Thomas yelled abuse and knifed the dinghy to deflate it - with a rescuer still on board.

..so the problem here is not that Ministers say there are "legitmate concerns" about immigration. It's that Ministers don't come out & say "but some so-called concerns, expressed both by so-called protestors and the media, are frankly just xenophobia and racism, and they should have no place here"

If you're in government watching criminal-led blackshirt thugs in balaclavas wage war on the RNLI and you're hedging your bets because you're not sure who the majority of the country will side with, why do you even want to be in government? Why would you WANT to lead people you think so little of?

Unexpectedly intervened in a suicide attempt off a bridge in Cork, which was unexpected but everyone is fine and clean forgot to take a picture of the well deserved Guinness #4. Was very handy to be hanging out with a team of therapists who were great but could have used a security professional

Cos of my event work I spend a lot of time holding up decibel meters to things and some of the "how can the resident possibly be expected to live through this" videos and the readings they are getting are equivalent to living next to a normal road.

I think it's worse actually because in 2003 you had to go out of your way to say not all Muslims, Islam compatible with life in a democracy, just these extremists etc. and now they don't bother.

Large portions of the data center backlash are based on moral panic, but the the tech right VC types upset by it are very funny considering how gleeful they were about the demise of ‘legacy’ media. What’s that? You’re missing epistemic gatekeepers who would place complex facts in context? Tough shit

Anyway, Brian Eno said it best:
Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature.
CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It's the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.

I think (hope) this type of thing has failed to understand the electoral backlash the type of politics this type of guy represents is about to receive. I really hope the Americans find a *vengeful* candidate next time round to properly shut the door to these guys.

If you were to be born at random today in a random country your odds of living a good life in a free and rich country are significantly significantly better if it's a monarchy. Worst case it's a rich gulf state, very very worst N Korea. I would rethink some of your assumptions.

I don't disagree with this but so much American commentary completely misses that the damage to alliances/soft power is not something a democrat administration can restore without profound changes at a system level. I think this will be it's biggest impact mid term personally.
