Every time I stir the biomass, I feel lucky to have been chosen. The stirrer is flat and smooth, made of blonde wood; the biomass is thick and smells of overripe fruit. I look down into the buttery orange swirls in the bucket, and it amazes me that just a few months ago I was helping a friend paint her new nursery walls a similar color. But before her baby arrived, I was selected, and now I'm here making history.

I walk across the dusty field to the wooden shed in our small corner of the "estate" —which is more like a compound--and press my palm to the scanner, one of the Master's few concessions to modern technology. Electricity and running water seem almost out of place here. Everything else on the compound is rustic: the big farmhouse in which he lives; the bunkhouse where the astants sleep; a couple of small cabins, one of which is crammed with materials, the other which I claimed for myself by...

This. I can't recommend enough reading & editing for journals if you get the chance. It shows you how much time & work goes into the publishing process. Also that rejections aren't a reflection on the quality of work, because there's often hundreds of submissions to sort through.

When Nickole Brown and I started talking about this topic, the more-than-human world, we had no idea that so many people would feel that it is indeed time to de-center human experience and consider a world where animals and plants have autonomy, their own experiences, their own lives.

From @edrabinski.bsky.social today, librarians are at the front lines (again) of protecting knowledge. “Academic libraries make soft targets for administrators who too often look at the library and see only a cost center that can be replaced by free online sources and artificial intelligence.”

Patricia Fargnoli, whose birthday is today, and who passed from this world in 2021, on finding comfort in the woods when the world is too much.
Still Water by Patricia Fargnoli
[epigraph] "What times are these when a poem about trees is almost a crime because it contains silence against so many outrages." Brecht [/end epigraph]

And why not silence?
Ahead of me, Goose Pond parts pale water
and my canoe slides through into June sun, cathedral quiet,/soft plumes of cloud.
A thin gauze of rain stalls over Mt. Monadnock.

This is the way I drift

from each skirmish with the world
to the diplomacy of light
as it flares off the water./flickers among the flute-notes
of birds hidden in the leaning birches.

Would you condemn me?

I've already held the old bodies of grief
long past morning; leave them
to the ministrations/
of the dirt-borers
who work what is finished back into the earth.

Some atrocities are beyond redemption--

you know them already--
the world will be the world no matter.
I want the blinding silver of this small pond/to stun my eyes,
the palaver of leaves to stop my ears.

Poetry is for everybody. If more publishers and newspapers and magazines and media in general treat poetry like something that is present, accessible, in demand, and marketable like they do other genres, they will see more and more people reading and buying poetry books. Truth.
