Every time sexual assault breaks through the news cycle, women unlock their catacombs of stories about their own assaults. Older women like me remember wave after wave of stories, told in shame, in defiance, in pain, in solidarity.

The end of summer where I live has a distinct scent. Musk of red elderberries crushed under foot. Yellow sweetness of wild chamomile’s fading blossoms. Rot of jewelweed and nettle overburdened and flattened onto the path. Mineral tang of the muddy shoulder of the gravel road.

I've become a person who doesn’t want to write poems that sit like a well-formed vase on a steady table. I’ve become a person who is more interested in poetry that seems like maybe a spell? Maybe a teacup of rainwater? Maybe a glass upturned over a hole under which a wasp nest might reside?
