new to querying? our friendly neighborhood literary agent & columnist Danielle Bukowski broke it down for you:
Q: What’s the ideal time to query agents? I’ve heard conflicting advice about summer slowdowns and holiday dead zones.
A: The best time to query your book is when your book is ready to be queried: you’ve edited as best you can and you’ve done your research on agents. If a sub is really buzzy it’s going to move fast: so don’t query on a Friday and then leave for a two-week internet-free vacation on Saturday.Q: How long after finishing a manuscript should I start querying?
A: Manuscripts aren’t large cuts of meat so I don’t see the benefit of letting them rest. Query your manuscript when you believe it is ready, and you’ve workshopped your query letter, and you’ve done the work of compiling your list of agents. Only you can determine a manuscript’s readiness for submission.
Q: How long should I hold out hope for my book on submission before moving on to the next manuscript?
A: Knowing when to move on is an essential skill for a writer looking to make a career as an author.
There’s a line between dogged determination and willful ignorance. A year spent actively submitting is a pretty clear indication that the market doesn’t want your manuscript at this time. But if agents are requesting fulls and offering useful feedback, revise and try again.

6 Lit mags you gotta submit to this week (& why)

Pleiades Magazine
An 80s mag that continues to stay relevant. They have a great book review as well as a print and online presence, and their acceptance rate is very much in the sweet spot.

The London Magazine
A literary magazine older than my grandpa, but one that’s pretty much cemented its place in the lit mag world.

The Literary Fantasy Magazine
A mag that’s new to me but has been around for a couple years. They want stories that challenge convictions and paint new horizons.

A Public Space
I’ve met some of the folks behind A Public Space and this lit mag and press has a great, genuine team behind it.

VOLTA
A fairly new lit mag that has a great name (I’m a sucker for all-caps names), they want work that’s imagistically vibrant and emotionally raw and ambitious.

ONLY POEMS
In preparation and celebration for this not-a-real-holiday-but-what-the-heck, the Poem of the Month theme is all about dads. So, um, send your daddy poems.
