This is what is at stake w/trump--the very idea of the US itself as a representative democracy that rejects monarchy. trump calls into question all that we as Americans claim to stand for, all that we claim to celebrate for 250th anniversary of Decl of Ind. One can choose *either* trump or US

So I stumble across a cool new paper on the fascinating and relevant-to-my-interests Koa'e fault system just south of Kīlauea caldera on Hawai'i, and it says "we monitored the fault system with EDM", and I'm like "surely @spacewhalerider.com worked on this?!?" 😂 www.frontiersin.org/journals/ear...

Funniest part to me is Jack Smith using 110% of his lawyer brain. He avoids making the connection himself; he doesn't even say "Hawkeyes," he just says "Iowa." He knows it's better to let everyone figure it out on their own. He also knows from Klobuchar's grin that she'll dunk it for him.

With a little luck, “hone in on” will gradually die, because it ultimately doesn’t mean anything useful. It’s a typo (damn you, Plimpton!) that won‘t go away.

And while it’s evolving, it can be grating. “Hone in on,” for example, makes no sense. Missiles home in. Knives are honed to a sharp edge. Honing in on something would mean (roughly) sharpening it to get closer to it. It’s silly, but people still say it with great energy and certainty.

I have particular animus for autistic tech bros who suggest people should overlook their assholery as mere “quirkiness” and “part of their disability” The toxicity of their online spaces that encourage and reward edgelord shit makes a trap for this generation’s neurodivergent kids.

It's me, the mythical STEM PhD who not only took history classes but got a whole history degree! Studying history is arguably one of the most important things STEM students can do. Science isn't done in a vacuum, and students should investigate the people, places, and events that shape it.

I want to draw attention to this as often as I can - not only is this *action* terrible, the intention behind it is to consolidate power and eliminate the three branches of government. The courts are already severely compromised. The power of the purse belongs to Congress.

I'm obviously biased because I study Mimas (and Herschel specifically), but this little moon really is incredibly interesting and unique. There's a lot we can learn from its cratering record about whether it may actually be a "stealth" ocean world (one whose ocean seems missing at first glance).
Cassini's two highest-resolution views from its 13 February 2010 flyby of Mimas caught the southern half of the crater Herschel and an area to its east. This view is composed of two clear-filter images taken from the raw JPEG website. They were rotated to put north up and their levels adjusted to make the coloration fairly continuous. The interior of Herschel is covered in what appears to be post-formation modification. Credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech / SSI / mosaic by Emily LakdawallaAnother Cassini image, this one from farther away in 2005. Herschel lies on the terminator of Mimas in this image, keeping the entire crater floor in shadow with the exception of the central peak. The overall effect is mildly menacing.

Crater Fact Friday ☄️DID YOU KNOW☄️ that Saturn's moon Mimas looks like the Death Star? The iconic crater that gives it this appearance is Herschel, and its sharp central peak and steep walls may tell us about the age of a potential ocean deep beneath the surface!
Image of a moon that looks like the death star but is a real moon. Surface covered in many craters with a large prominent crater (Herschel crater) on the right with a large central peak.Close up image Herschel crater highlighting large central peak.
