At your local rink or in the Stanley Cup Final, you’ve seen Inglasco’s pucks on the ice. They’re the NHL’s exclusive puck supplier, and they’ve been based in Sherbrooke, Québec, for more than 50 years. So remember: behind every puck drop and every goal, is a little bit of Canada.

Same thing will eventually happen (minus the big tide-driven waves) to the Hudson Line on Metro North out of NYC. 😢🥺😭 (And yes, the Hudson River up until about Poughkeepsie (where I by coincidence live) is an elongated tidal estuary, or a fjord if you prefer. Sea level matters).

Slip model for the 7.7 Mw Panama Earthquake today is interesting. Two big patches and looks like bidirectional rupture? Images from here: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...
USGS finite fault model results from the link. Plots the fault's intersection with the surface as a red line along the Azuero Peninsula and the fault itself as a rectangle dipping towards the northeast. The dark purple patches are the areas of highest slip, up to more than 6 meters.Same fault slip model, but plotted as it would be if we were looking straight at the fault plane's surface. Slip amount is shown in yellow to red to purple colors from 0 to 2 to 4 to 6 or more meters of slip. Grey dashed contours with numbers represent the extent of the rupture over time. These appear to progress out from the earthquake's origin (the star marker) in both directions along the fault.

Aftershocks provide a pretty good idea of what the fault that ruptured today in the magnitude 7.7 Mw Panama Earthquake looks like. Oriented striking sightly off of east-west, they're a good match for the 288 degree nodal plane in the USGS's moment tensor for the event.
USGS map of the mainshock (largest orange circle) and aftershocks (smaller circles) of today's Panama Earthquake. The earthquakes form a clear line about 150 km long that's shifted slightly south of east-west and runs across the entire Azuero Peninsula.

Moment tensor is now up. Earthquake has been reevaluated to be a 7.7 Mw magnitude event. Dominantly strike-slip motion, consistent with this being a fairly shallow event and the tectonics of the region.

Shit. USGS has this as a magnitude 8. Initial event depth is a 33 km, given the type of faults there this seems a bit unlikely (might be shallower).

Condolences to my Yankee fan family and friends (the best part of that fanbase), but the final Regular Season standings in the A.L. East really held true in the two series. The matchup I’d really like to see is Tampa vs. Milwaukee, with Chicago being an acceptable substitute.

...Federal marshals subsequently orchestrated the transfer of all 287 bars to local police. In a secret operation, officers guarded the 282 bars before returning them to the CIA. The agency promises that the 271 gold bars stolen by Mr Rush will be sold and the profits used to reimburse US taxpayers.
When F.B.I. agents first searched his house, they said they found 303 gold bars. In court on Tuesday, prosecutors said that the correct number was 298 gold bars, and that they had cost the government more than $46 million to obtain.

Orca and salmon planes on a foggy Seattle morning. The liveries are called “West Coast Wonders” and “Xaat Kwaani” (can’t get the accents to work, but it means Salmon People in Tlingit). Two of my three favorite Alaska liveries, the third being Meatball.
Two Alaska planes, one at a gate and one moving in the background. The closest plane is painted in blue, white, and pink and depicts salmon in the style of Alaska Native/Northwest Coast people. The other plane has a pod of orca cavorting on a background of several shades of blue.
A better view of the salmon plane.
