The decline of birthrates is for the most part a global triumph we should be celebrating, not lamenting. Bad for economic stability, sure, but great for sustainability in the long term. It is simply not possible to improve living standards and increase the global population with finite resources.

One of the young roadrunners returned about an hour later. I brought out the snack bowl but the noise from the wind is still bugging. So I took back the bowl and tossed the snacks over to Nervous Nellie. That worked much better. The birds hatched in April, how long can I call them young, I wonder?

A visiting roadrunner is standing about 5 feet away from a bowl of mealworms on a backyard patio. It is windy and the noise makes the bird nervous.

• Too fat to escape manling by dogs
• She weighed a whopping 540g
TOO many tasty sausages almost killed this kookaburra.
But health worries weren't the threat. She became so obese from barbecue handouts she could not fly when attacked by dogs in a Mosman park.
After weighing in at 540g. 40 per cent heavier than a typical adult bird, the kookaburra has been sent to bird boot camp to shed weight, prompting Taronga Zoo to wam we are killing our wildlife with kindness.
