We've passed the autumn equinox so I reckon that means it's YORKSHIRE PARKIN SEASON. Here's my recipe from all the way back in 2011 😲 britishfoodhistory.com/2011/11/04/y...

Yorkshire Parkin
God, I love Yorkshire parkin. If you are not familiar with it, it’s a strongly-spiced sticky gingerbread-cum-cake flavoured with treacle and dark brown sugar that is traditionally eaten …

#ReEnchantment is resistance.
I believe humanity always lives in its folklore. I believe humanity is stories. Those stories walk and those stories need places to live. Those tales are how we relate to landscape. Those tales are how we connect to each other, how we build community and how we resist. That is why Hookland exists. For in the hopeless moment when all the territory is darkening bruise, that’s when we need stories and re-enchantment the most.

The land withers. Autumn is told in both the fading scars of drought and the gathering mud. Hooklanders call this blurred border of days harbrim. A time whenthey know that mists are coming to eat certainty and monsters feast to fatten ahead of hibernation. – #DAKilroy, 1982

Short boat ride over the harbour to Sherkin Island - Inis Arcáin Nice walk to Horseshoe Harbour anc then along towards the south of the island. Found a very interesting art exhibition all based around geolocated old names for places and older residents memories of them
Horseshoe Harbour, Sherkin Island
Some rocks in the lower left lead to a large expanse of water. Some hills and cliffs can be seen in the distance and on the right with a wide opening to the sea. The sky is mostly filled with high cloud and with some brighter openings to the blue sky

At the 1896 Olympics they had a 12-hour track race. The winner took a lap in the first ten minutes and then sat on for the rest of the day. Think about that next time you're watching an allegedly boring bike race.

This made me smile, attached to an ordinary cast iron drainpipe on a house in Durham. #TinyJoys
A cast iron drain pipe going down the side of a white-painted house. A crest of red feathers and a bright orange beak made from something solid have been attached around it. It looks remarkably like "Feathers McGraw", the evil criminal penguin from The Wrong Trousers.

Got the radio on and keep hearing on the news how "AI" companies want to slow up because it could be dangerous. No suggestion, of course, that they're just saying this to distract from their complete failure to produce something that actually makes money, despite all the hype, theft and money spent.

A little earlier this evening, a public clock was working
Sundial in Baltimore, Cork. It is marked for local apparent time and shows either about 5:30 or 6:30ish summer time. Taken at 19:20 this is about right as Baltimore is about 9.5°W of GreenwichLooking the other was from the sundial over Baltimore harbour. In the foreground is some green space, a car/boat park and the sailing club building

NEWS: A sad update from our Risk List 2025. The former National Wildflower Centre in Court Hey Park, Merseyside (Hodder + Partners, 2000) has now been demolished. In its place…an area of tarmac. What an utter waste. This idiosyncratic 520ft long building should have been imaginatively repurposed.

Terence Cuneo & the "heroic age" of motorways - a view from a helicopter of the southern section of the London - Birmingham /Yorkshire motorway on the cover of a publicity book issued by the builder's ,John Laing, in 1959. @roads.org.uk @showmeasign.online @sabre-roads.org.uk ↘️ flic.kr/p/2sw4M43
The London - Birmingham Motorway : L. T. C. Rolt : John Laing and Son Ltd : [London] : 1959 : cover by : Terence Cuneo : the scene from an oil painting gives an overview of a temporary railway bridge over a newly dug cutting with, in the background, the new 'scar' of the outline of the road in the background cutting across a rural landscape. The title panel in 'motorway' blue, takes the form of a motorway traffic sign and includes the short-lived parallel line symbol proposed to denote motorways.

The cover to a marvellous 'glossy' brochure issued by the construction company John Laing and Son Ltd., the "builders of Britain's first major motorway' on the basis that this section of the M1 completed on 31 October 1959 post-dated that of the Preston By-pass section of the M6 in Lancashire that had opened on 5 December 1958. The booklet issued by Laing alongside the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and the consulting engineers Sir Owen Williams & Partners tells of the remarkable period of construction of the Motorway between Luton, Dunchurch and Crick, where work began on 24 March 1958 in a field at Slip End at 1500hrs and that was completed in nineteen months.

The text, illustrations and photographs considers the surveying, planning, design and construction of the motorway that had been tendered in four contract sections in 1957 and awarded in January 1958. The text, written by noted author R. T. C. Rolt, conveys the sense that this work was to be considered alongside the heroic age of railway construction. The cover is taken from a painting by Terence Cuneo entitled "View from a helicopter, London - Yorkshire Motorway (Southern Section)" and reminds us of the extensive use of helicopter and radio technology to enable construction.
