I saw a few people on here saying "we thought Brazil was good at dealing with fascism, how come Bolsonaro's son is leading" but that take fails to acknowledge the scale of the challenge that antifascists face in Brazil (Google "Marielle Franco 2018"). What they have achieved there is incredible.

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

hottest years ever measured. Global temperatures again exceeded 1.5C

important climate target.
And yet, the investment signal moved in the opposite direction.
Decarbonization powered climate tech's takeoff in 2020, backed by

Cannot overstate how refreshing and great it is to read this fantastic piece on how 'climate tech' has completely lost the plot. Eye-opening to realise just how inevitable the forgetting of climate as a priority is, when pin all this on capitalism intercalationstation.substack.com/p/we-lost-th...
Some are arguing that the industry needs to leverage the moment to accelerate the scale-up of climate technologies, as if data centers and drones can be a beachhead market to decarbonization broadly. This “nice” idea fails to acknowledge that many of these markets (e.g., batteries for the Department of War) are very small and will not move the needle across the industry. These markets often necessitate vastly different performance metrics than, say, the EV or grid storage markets, challenging the idea that progress in the beachhead will do much for the broader electrification opportunity. The thesis further ignores the direct harms these industries are doing to the electrification argument: for example, rising electricity prices coming from the data center buildout severely harm the unit economics of most electrified technologies that rely on cheap electricity to justify the replacement of fossil incumbent processes. And then, of course, there’s the complete ignorance to the deeper, climate-negative implications of massive, rapid load growth coming from data centers and the growing “us versus them” geopolitics being fueled by the anti-China rhetoric driving the national security conversation. In the former case, we have yet to meaningfully transition (i.e., retire fossil assets) anything about our grid to date, calling into question the sanity of allowing substantial load growth that will only exacerbate our problem. In the latter case, we are rapidly approaching the need for global coordination to enact climate solutions of all shapes and sizes. Not to mention the war in Iran released 5 million metric tons of CO2 in just 14 days, the equivalent of a 1 GW coal plant running for nearly a year, and the US spent over $25B on that war in under 60 days, the same amount invested in the whole Clean Tech 1.0 era.

So I’m calling for radical honesty about what is actually happening. We talk about climate denialism as a disease of those who reject the science, but more pervasive may be the denial among those seeking to solve this problem about what solving it actually requires. If a climate week didn’t talk about climate, why are we still calling it climate week? The virtue-signaling and greenwashing running rampant in our industry — the pat-on-the-back events, the optimistic LinkedIn posts — are not just unhelpful. They actively obscure the problem. I find that the average Gen Z-er is more critical of data centers than most climate professionals I know. That should embarrass us.

The deeper issue is that we’ve been trying to solve a systemic problem with a narrow tool. The neoliberal solution set — drop-in technologies that slot into the existing status quo order, hardly the “disruption” we like to envision when we talk about venture-backed startups — is structurally incapable of driving the true change required. There is no such thing as a free market: agriculture, petrochemicals, and defense have all been propped up by aggressive industrial policy for decades. Climate deserves at minimum the same treatment and arguably necessitates full-scale policy prioritization. Which policies we pick must result from a genuine reckoning with the finite nature of our planet, the unviability of perpetual growth, and the deep power structures that are equally responsible for the historic wealth inequality we face today as the continued divide of the Global North and South. Degrowth, techno-negativity, and other ideas currently dismissed as radical deserve as serious engagement as the techno-economic approach that has so far failed to move the needle.

Paragraph from the letter in the quoted post.

We must protect and cultivate the ecosystem of human knowledge. AI models can mimic the appearance of scholarly work, but they are (by construction) unconcerned with truth—the result is a torrential outpouring of unchecked but convincing-sounding "information". At best, such output is accidentally true, but generally citationless, divorced from human reasoning and the web of scholarship that it steals from. At worst, it is confidently wrong. Both outcomes are dangerous to the ecosystem.

The committee believes that the guidelines for companies that produce nuclear weapons should be changed.

– This means that several European and American companies that produce components for nuclear weapons can be re-admitted to the fund, the press release states.

The prerequisite is that the company is domiciled in an allied country that is a nuclear weapons state according to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The justification mentions that the security policy situation has changed and that Norway is building up its defense.
