New #AIES paper w/ @benzevgreen.bsky.social & @tisjune.bsky.social - "Deconstructing AI Hype: A Playbook for Resistance"! Read here: shreyachowdhary.net/files/decons... We argue that AI hype is a problem not because it misdescribes AI, but because it facilitates AI entrenchment.

New #CSCW26 paper with @benzevgreen.bsky.social! Many data scientists want to support social justice efforts but struggle to identify how to do so. Drawing on movement lawyering, we offer practical guidance for finding productive ways to work in solidarity with movements. doi.org/10.1145/381697

Keep seeing people asking this question! The college students who were protesting the genocide in Gaza 2023-24 are mostly either still protesting w/less media coverage or going through lengthy disciplinary processes and school investigations and lawsuits punishing their protesting. Hope this helps!

It is, and because there's a bit of a disconnect between the critical progressive tech folks and left-wing organizing in general (which we are going to need to close very quickly)

The thing about fight like a picket line is that it forces you to choose sides. That's what the song is about! You're with the striking workers or you're with the bosses and the cops. Empirically, things are more complicated. But politically, you have to choose--because the picket draws a line.

He died as he lived, clicking “Forgot password,” then checking his inbox for a code, then putting in that code, then setting up two-step verification, and then waiting for the text message that doesn’t come, and then calling the 800 number, and then downloading an authenticator app, and dying.

If you see anyone talking about how the Amazon strike could disrupt the flow of packages:
Don’t make me tap the sign. Strikes are supposed to be disruptive

If Luigi joined the IDF and massacred 50,000 Palestinian children, John Fetterman would clap and cheer. If he defrauded cancer patients en masse, maybe Biden would pardon him. Could go on and on and on

I made a shareable version of our "AI workers' inquiry for University Workers and Students." We used this as part a workshop last month. Feel free to re-use, improve, and reach out if you wanna compare notes on running a similar workshop at your uni! docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Photo of a red flier that reads in large white text: "AI" IS NOT INEVITABLE: a workshop for AI skeptics at U-M. This workshop will gather folks from across the University - staff, faculty, teachers, researchers, students - whose everyday work is being impacted by the proliferation of "AI" technologies. We will compare notes on how our work is impacts, examine the financial motivations driving U-M's promotion of "AI" tech like UM GPT and MiMaizie, and explore the potential harms of "AI" at UM, including environmental impacts.
