And I'm sorry, but with so many now claiming the Greens "punched above their weight in government", it has to be said: One Green minister drafted a forestry plan that was mostly about ramping up sitka, while another Green minister insisted sheep graze a national park.

I highly doubt there is any chance anything I’ll ever say is seen by anyone at the NYT but on the off chance, when trump happens again it is absolutely going to be your fault and I want that to haunt you until your dying breath.

On Sloughi hound, its ancient origins, its #relationship with #ancient #Egyptian #PEOPLE1 and what I wrote about this breed in my #book #ORIGINS (details in the alternative text) #dogs #dogsarefamily #pets #puppy #Archaeology #History #art #AncientKingdoms #Egypt
Female Sloughi nursing her 5 cubs - Middle Kingdom limestone figurine 2033 - 1710 BC - Egypt - Louvre Museum in Paris.

The Sloughi is a very ancient greyhound. Genetic research has found that this breed is at least 8,000 years old and is indigenous to Northern Africa (no relation to Salukis or other 'Oriental' greyhounds). Zooarchaeologists have found a sloughi skeleton dated over 5,500 years ago in predynastic Egypt; the first representations of this African greyhound date back to the same period (an ivory statuette and a hunting scene painted on tomb 100 of Nekhen).
I wrote about this ancient breed in "ORIGINS - In search of ancient dog breeds" (Part One: from Prehistory to Ancient Greece) online in paper and electronic format. In English, Italian, Spanish, French and Russian.
If you are interested in understanding how dogs and humans evolved in ancient times, you know what to do.

Forests with multiple tree species are 70% more effective as carbon sinks than monoculture forests. To slow the effects of climate change, conserve biodiversity, and meet the sustainable development goals, restoring forests is vital. Restored forests store carbon within the forest's soil & trees.

Tough year for art sales and I depend solely on it for a living, so if you like anything I do, I'd appreciate if you'd keep me in mind when buying gifts for friends or family. If you hate what I do, I'd appreciate if you'd keep me in mind when buying gifts for enemies or nemeses.

What looks like moss on the north face of a giant slab of rock in the woods is, in fact, one of the three filmy ferns in Ireland associated with rainforest. They're called 'filmy' because their fronds are only a single cell thick (amazing, huh?), and so are translucent. 🌎

Daniel Barenboim has long been a hero of mine. One of the best conductors and pianists of the last 50 years. When he co-founded the Israeli-Palestinian youth symphony orchestra “West Eastern Divan Orchestra” with Palestinian Edward Said, in 1999, I gained even more respect and admiration for him.

There is indeed an XKCD cartoon for every occasion.
An xkcd cartoon in which a stick man sings about Ea-Nasir's substandard copper to the tune of A Sound of Music's "A few of my favourite things":

"Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,
Bright copper kettles leave... flakes on my mittens?
Hey, these are stone with a copper veneer!
I've been bamboozled by Ea-Nasir!"

About #Tutankhamon and his passion for sloughi hound and what i wrote on #Origins #dogs #egypt #archaeology #art #history
Pharaoh Tutankhamun is famous for having been a ruler who died, perhaps, too soon (he died at about 20/21 years). Son of Akenathon, the young king probably loved to hunt with his dog, a sloughi. We see him in this ostrich hunting scene represented in the well-known golden fan found in his tomb.
I have dedicated an entire chapter to Sloughi and its antiquity in my book 'Origins - In search of ancient dog breeds' which you can find on all online bookstores in paperback and electronic format (pdf, epub, mobi).

Very sad to hear of the death of Edmund Lynch - he was an almost daily visitor to the Gutter Bookshop & was always great craic. He was delighted to be a Grand Marshal at Dublin Pride earlier this year (although he denied it...) I'll miss his caustic wit. #LGBTQ #Dublin

I'm still annoyed about this so here's just one example: I find the pledge of allegiance pretty offensive. Do you think the schools I attended banned it to preserve my religious freedom? LOL. They didn't even just let me quietly not participate. I had to leave the room.
