I don’t want to live in a city where the first priority is tourists anymore. And I don’t want to live in a city without a symphony. Now what.

This afternoon, I watched a crossing guard screaming at a Waymo to SLOW DOWN as it flew by her, seemingly oblivious to the school zone cones out despite its 27,000 surveillance cameras. Waymo sucks, man.

It is pretty wild that Nashville only has three non-interstate vehicle crossing points from Downtown to East Nashville. Part of the pain felt by the James Robertson closure is the fact that the city has historically not invested in better connections. www.newschannel5.com/news/newscha...

Rage 🧵: A few years ago, our neighbors complained to the city about the plant growth on a steep slope in our backyard. It’s so steep that lawn care companies told me they won’t mow it. The city didn’t care. They threatened us with thousands of dollars in fines. I ended up writing about it:

My hot take (supported by data): with very few exceptions, money spent on social media, outreach, PSAs, etc. is wasted. It doesn't improve safety or driver behavior. I'd rather see the money spent on bringing design and building capacity in-house.

As a former ped/bike planner who just got (very lightly) hit by driver turning on red recently (in a city that banned it), the closing paragraph had me cheering
To allow drivers any evidence at all that traffic laws are supererogatory is to abandon all hope of order; to allow them this evidence in the face of the
sternest prohibition traffic control has to offer—a red light—is to welcome carnage. Anyone who has ever been faced with making a right on red with someone impatient behind them understands that principle. In the absence of Leviathan, you get the war of all against all.

A coupla things here: 1) People, by and large, obey the law 2) No Turn On Red is self-enforcing. One good citizen stopping as required, prevents other people in the queue from breaking the law. This has a compounding effect. 3) This is purely an argument between driver convenience & ped safety. 🧵

More people than cars on the Woodland Street bridge at rush hour this morning. The fact that we just repaved and restriped this bridge to replicate the same absurd allocation of right-of-way is ridiculous.

I’m on my way to BNA right now to pick up a rental car, because they are less than half the price to rent at the airport than at a rental agency in town. Yet another reason why fast and frequent connections to airports are a must for any city.

A city centre should not function as a shortcut for motorists passing through. It should serve as the 'gezellige' living room of the city: a place where residents and tourists feel comfortable spending time, where children move freely, and where local businesses benefit from a vibrant public realm.
