Spivey says that through the day yesterday ahead of the execution, Pike was expressing concern about Colleen Slemmer's mother who was there to witness the execution and saying she couldn't imagine what it was like for her. Spivey reiterates concern and condolences for that family.

I will emphasize that as witnesses at the prison last night, we did not know for sure that there had been issues placing the IV lines because that part of the process is not done publicly. An attorney is there but witnesses do not see it.

Attorney Stephen Ferrell who was outside the prison repeats earlier statements that Pike's attorneys could not reach anyone in the governor's office. He adds that they called an emergency phone number they were given to contact the Tennessee Supreme Court and the call went to voicemail.
