Three thousand years ago, a Greek potter looked at a bowl and thought: ‘You know what this needs? A leg!’ Clay bowl with leg-shaped handle!🦵😆 Early Geometric period 850 BC. Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Greek pottery bowl with a rounded, deep body, wide open mouth and flared rim. It has a large handle shaped like a human leg, extending from the left side of the bowl in my photo, bending at a right angle and ending in a flat foot. The bowl has a camel-coloured surface decorated with dark brown geometric patterns, which include zigzags and meander motifs arranged in horizontal bands around the body of the bowl and along the leg. From Attica, Early Geometric period, circa 850 BC. It sits on a light stone coloured surface in a display case at the Altes Museum in Berlin.

We see the sun as golden. Yet this is an optical illusion. In reality, our sun shines in pure white. Earth's atmosphere scatters the sunlight, coloring it gold to our eyes. That is why sunrises and sunsets appear so colorful. A small miracle of physics. A source of great wonder at nature.

Strawberry economics
A four frames comics about how I can afford strawberries as a 34 year old adult. The first frame shows a bunch of gariguette strawberries in a box at the supermarket. The text reads: "STRAWBERRIES ON SALE". In the second frame I am holding the box of strawberries happily, saying "And I have enough money left to afford them!". In the third frame I am eating them and saying "Mmm a scrumptious treat...". In the fourth frame I am closing my eyes and thinking "The economy is very bad".

Some 4,300 years ago, an Egyptian artisan carved this little hedgehog emerging from its burrow! 🦔❤️ Lovely naturalistic detail from a limestone wall relief in the Tomb of Mereruka at Saqqara. Old Kingdom, Sixth Dynasty, c. 2330 BC. 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology
My photo shows a wall carving in low relief of a hedgehog emerging from its burrow or shelter. Detail from a wall relief of a hunting scene in the Tomb of Mereruka, Vizier of King Teti, Sixth Dynasty, c. 2330 BC.

The hedgehog is depicted in profile facing right with the front portion of its body emerging from the somewhat triangular-shaped burrow or shelter, perhaps a mound of soil. Its body is rounded, with two short forelegs. It has a narrow face with a pointed muzzle, an almond-shaped eye, and a pointed ear. A horizontal line across the middle of its body shows the delineation between its soft underbelly and its spiny back (spines not depicted) On either side of the hedgehog and its burrow there is a low mound topped by vertical wavy lines representing desert grass. Ground level is represented by a horizontal line.

In ancient Egyptian art, hedgehogs were sometimes associated with protection and regeneration, likely because of their defensive spines and habit of curling up, as well as being nocturnal animals with the ability to see in the dark (perfect for the underworld). They were also hunted for food. This little hedgehog in Mereruka’s tomb may carry two meanings at once. A hunted food offering to provide nourishment and also magical protection for his rebirth.

A 3,500 year-old Egyptian glass cosmetic jar with two little duck heads! Glass was a relatively new material at that time, so this jar would have been a precious possession. From Merit’s beauty case, found inside Theban tomb (TT8) of Merit and her husband Kha in 1906. 📷 Museo Egizio #Archaeology
Museo Egizio Turin photo showing a small, dark-blue, core-formed, round glass jar which tapers in at the shoulders below the neck. It has yellow, white, and light blue festoon decoration trailed around the main body. There is a single yellow trail just below the neck of the jar. There is a dark-blue circular glass lid, the top of which is adorned with two dark-blue duck heads with yellow bills, a yellow trailed stripe on the top of each duck’s head, and indents for their eyes. The jar is displayed on a perspex (?) stand against a grey background. Glass jar dimensions: 7.6 cm x 9.6 cm.

Core-forming is one of the earliest glassmaking techniques. Glassmakers shaped the body of the vessel around a core, wound colored trails around it. They then let the vessel cool and removed the core.

Artists have always loved to sketch! Sketch of a sparrow from Egypt dated c. 1479–1458 BC. Some 3,500 years ago in Egypt, artists used small flakes of limestone as sketchpads! MMA excavations 1922-23, Deir el-Bahri. 📷 The Met www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti... #FindsFriday #Archaeology
Met Museum photo of an Ancient Egyptian artist’s painting of a swallow on a flake of limestone, dated to the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, c. 1479-1458 BC.

The sparrow stands in profile with head to the right. It is delicately painted with a pinkish body. The outline and details are highlighted in a reddish/brown pigment. It’s legs, eye, and beak are painted black. Limestone flake dimensions H. 6.6 cm x W. 10.6 cm.

This may have been a practice drawing of the sparrow hieroglyph which was used for words meaning ‘small’, ‘poor’, or ‘bad’.

Egyptian artisans who decorated tombs and temples made practice sketches on flakes of limestone which are known by egyptologists as ostraca (singular: ostracon). Sometimes the drawings were used as a template when transferring an image to the wall of a tomb or a temple. Limestone flakes were readily available for this purpose as by-products of the construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. A number of ostraca were recovered at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations.
