Excited to see our fMRI paper is out, led by Itamar Kahn’s lab. Our grad students, Amir Lawen and Bella Succi, in collab with Darcy Peterka, built a setup for simultaneous fMRI and dopamine fiber photometry in awake behaving mice. We learned some new biology too. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I enjoyed covering this one for @livescience.com, especially the description of an ancient mammal relative being "like a chimera", with the back being like a platypus, but the front sporting sharp teeth for rending prey. If only the prey weren't salamanders - one of my favourite animals. 🧪 🐸 🦊 🐍 🦇

Finally, my paper is out! It shows how bacteria can utilize their CRISPR immunity against transducing phages to turn them into "pollinators". This way bacteria can speed up their own adaptation through recombination by two orders of magnitude compared to mutations, and they do so when starving!

“no review panels are scheduled, although about 600 proposals are still pending with SBE” So 600 teams of scientists got preliminary data, did analyses, wrote up proposals, got budgets approved, etc, based on NSF saying there were funds in this area. And now their work is just sitting there

That time I put almost all the chipmunk species in the western USA on one map. Did you know there’s 1 species of chipmunk in Asia, 1 in eastern USA & >20 in western USA? (I’m not the crazy one here. The chipmunks are the crazy ones.)
