Thinking about how plants and animals, who independently evolved multicellularity, both landed on the spatial expression of transcription factors as the way to figure out where all the parts go.
A diagram showing the MADS domains patterning a flower. Gene expression goes from the outside in with A,B,C,D, and E domains. E is expressed in all cells. In some cells, there is A and E expression, those cells develop into sepals. Cells with A, B, and E expression become petals. Those with B, C, and E become stamens. Those with C and E become carpals, and C, D, and E cells become ovules.Hox gene expression in the fly. The genes are shown in order on the chromosome and appear in the same order in the fly. The first gene patterns the mouth, the second the forehead, the third, the back of the head, etc.

For those who still work with SPSS files, but want to import them into #rstats If you want to retain user defined missing values in your data (-98 = refused), don't forget to add the "user_na = TRUE" argument if you are using haven::read_sav(). Otherwise, user-defined missing values import as NA.

I have been a PI for ~23 years now. Some of the things we do routinely in the lab now in molecular biology, genetics/genomics, I would never have believed possible when I started in science more than 30 years ago. But somehow fixing a broken microwave door latch mechanism is beyond me.

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

LongcalID, This sounds promising, bringing variant calling of most types in a single process, now if we could just add copy number, but at least this brings together phased SNV/INDEL calling with SV calling and maybe some somatic mosaic detection. @lh3lh3.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
