Oh, the @nytimes.com is writing about the class ceiling! Surely they will have cited and talked to Sam Friedman and Daniel Laurison who wrote about this, oh, 8 ish years ago, and not an economist who rediscovered the now obvious but published it in Journal of Econowhatever! Oh, wait.

In my chapter I explain why some conservatives find anti-gender discourses appealing, but also why these are inherently conspiratorial. The chapter might interest students of ideologies, conspiracy theories, far-right, & anti-gender movements. Free pdf here: karolinum.cz/data/book/33...

This book has just been published by Karolinum press; it looks at how various "Others" were formed in the Czech & Slovak discourses of the culture wars in the 2010s, i.e. the anti-gender, anti-Roma, antisemitic, or anti-Muslim discourses. It includes my chapter on "Gender Ideology" Conspiracism.

The problem w/ Cofnases & the far right in general is that they enjoy the privileges of institutions they work to undermine, they use the tools & rights of university & democratic life to pull down the entire edifice - & fellow academics just continue to sell them the rope they wish to hang us with!

Even worse, some try to pretend in their highmindedness that we have to defend the academic freedoms of racist frauds or else we are failling academia!? FFS, no! A person whose values are at odds with values of academic institutions deserves no protection, only speedy ostracism.

Pavol Hardoš @pavolhardos.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
The vicarious embarassment I feel when I see respectable academics lining up to defend this vile moron, ready to defend the “academic freedom” of a fraud is as embarassing as when others tried to deny Arday’s faults. But this is worse! Cofnas is transparent, has been for years!
120
Pavol Hardoš @pavolhardos.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
This is not a question of academic freedom, this is not a case of a “whistleblower” being punished for their integrity, this is a case of a far right ideologue exposing himself and embarassing an institution that hired him. A fraud who forgot he is also a fraud.
120
Pavol Hardoš @pavolhardos.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
A person hired not on merit but for opaque ideological reasons with a history of fraudulent, pseudoscientific work has exposed another fraud and accidentally put the spotlight on himself when the first fraud was hounded to a suicide in a racist campaign he helped orchestrate.
130
Pavol Hardoš @pavolhardos.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Like with Arday, with Cofnas the real scandal is how did such a fraud get an academic job in the first place. That is the real question, not why he is finally being fired. But now people who should know better are getting their panties in a twist and call this fraud a whistleblower.

Conspiracy Theories in the European Digital Sphere offers a comparative account of online conspiracism, considered in terms of platform preferences, ideological

The book offers a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective on online conspiracy theories, which are examined in terms of digital platforms, ideological content, culture, political context, communication flows, and the role that online conspiracy theories play in shaping community and identity.

It’s a chapter that may be somewhat provocative, which is why I’m already looking forward to the response (not just from the usual suspects). -- Overall, it was an amazing experience and a joy. Just look at the authors: a dream team of leading experts on conspiracy theories from all over Europe.

I’m most proud of our (w/ Ela Drazkiewicz) case study on Poland & Slovakia where we examine the anti-gender narratives of our broad illiberal right - both online and offline - and ask why these anti-gender and anti-LGBT *conspiracy theories* are almost never identified (or "labelled") as such.

🎉 *Conspiracy Theories in the European Digital Sphere* has just been published; it is the result of the international research project REDACT, in which I had the honor of participating as a researcher. (Thus whenever Slovakia is discussed in this book, I had a hand in it as an author.)

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

That these racist thugs have morphed into "far right influencers" is central. Being a bigot used to be a hobby. It is now a profession. We don't have to treat the monetisation of hate as an inevitable phenomenon. We can regulate platforms - not to supress speech, but to remove financial incentives.

One more thought: what if the internet-fueled participatory propaganda cycles — and those who know how to exploit them — are really good at garnering attention, harnessing grievance, and tearing down things (trust, institutions, USAID, the WH's east wing, etc.) but really bad at actually governing?

It’s been only 8 days since the Supreme Court’s VRA ruling. Republicans in Florida and Tennessee have already passed new congressional gerrymanders for 2026. Alabama is on the verge of doing so, and Louisiana will follow within days. Mississippi and South Carolina are actively debating it too
U.S. state map showing states in red where Republicans could eliminate Voting Rights Act-protected congressional districts that are predominantly Black or Latino and currently held by Democrats.

By 2028, Republicans could target VRA seats in:
Alabama: 2
Florida: 1
Georgia: 2
Louisiana: 2
Mississippi: 1
South Carolina: 1
Tennessee: 1
Texas: 2 (Texas Republicans could further weaken another 4 VRA seats held by Democrats that they already targeted in 2026 and 2 seats that Republicans currently hold)
Total: 12
