Research article "When Does Fame Not Matter? Examining Gender Differences in Politicians’ Social Media Experiences" by Maarja Lühiste, Stiene Praet, Sebastian Adrian Popa, Yannis Theocharis, Pablo Barberá, Zoltán Fazekas and Joshua A. Tucker,
Abstract begins: Past research alerts to the increasingly unpleasant climate surrounding public debate on social media. Female politicians, in particular, are reporting serious attacks targeted at them. Yet, research offers inconclusive insights regarding the gender gap in online incivility. This paper aims to address this gap by comparing politicians with varying levels of prominence and public status in different institutional contexts. Using a machine learning approach for analyzing over 23 million tweets addressed to politicians in Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, we find little consistent evidence of a gender gap in the proportion of incivility.

Contrary to Mark Zuckerberg’s claim that replacing fact-checkers with "community notes" will enhance free expression, this move does not seem intended to satisfy US users’ supposed craving for a return to Meta’s "free speech roots." The reality is far more nuanced.

When is speech on social media toxic enough to warrant content moderation? Platforms impose limits on what can be posted online, but also rely on users’ reports of potentially harmful content. Yet we know little about what users consider inadmissible to public discourse and what measures they wish to see implemented. Building on past work, we conceptualize three variants of toxic speech: incivility, intolerance, and violent threats. We present results from two studies with pre-registered randomized experiments (Study 1, N=5,130; Study 2, N=3,734) to examine how these variants causally affect users’ content moderation preferences. We find that while both the severity of toxicity and the target of the attack matter, the demand for content moderation of toxic speech is limited. We discuss implications for the study of toxicity and content moderation as an emerging area of research in political science with critical implications for platforms, policymakers, and democracy more broadly.

“Nostalgia in European Party Politics: A Text-Based Measurement Approach” (with Sven-Oliver Proksch) has been accepted for publication in the British Journal of Political Science! Paper (PDF): muellerstefan.net/papers/bjps_... polisky cssky 1/5
Abstract: Traditional research on political parties pays little attention to the temporal focus of communication but usually concentrates on promises, issue attention, and policy positions. This lack of scholarly attention is surprising, given that voters respond to nostalgic rhetoric and may even adjust issue positions when policy is framed in nostalgic terms. This article presents a novel dataset, PolNos, which contains six text-based measures of nostalgic rhetoric in 1,648 party manifestos across 24 European democracies from 1946 to 2018. The measures combine dictionaries, word embeddings, sentiment approaches, and supervised machine learning. Our analysis yields a consistent result: nostalgia is most prevalent in manifestos of culturally conservative parties, notably Christian democratic, nationalist, and radical right parties. However, substantial variation remains in terms of regional differences and whether nostalgia concerns the economy or culture. We discuss the implications a
