If you’re letting AI do a review of a manuscript for you, just know that (A) it’s super obvious to anyone reading it, (B) it’s dishonest - as you’re explicitly instructed not to do so, and (C) it’s careless - because you’re uploading someone’s confidential material to an AI app.

"We're all worried," as what it means to do research (in my field, Theoretical CS) seems to be shifting, and shifting fast. What to do? Senior researchers must lead by example, knowing that not everything will pan out. What I'm suggesting below may not work everywhere, but here's my own advice: 1/

1/9 Just out: k-mer indexes are the backbone of fast search in genomic data, but many degrade under small k, subsampling, or high diversity. With Ondřej Sladký and @pavelvesely.bsky.social we asked: can we build one that works efficiently for any k-mer set?

At scale, the way that we store (and process) data matters! Many may think that the way we keep data, the file formats we adopt, and the way that we compress data are unimportant details, but they are, in fact, critical considerations to allow science to move forward at scale!

The talks regarding Ukraine and Russia will fail. We have been there multiple times and this pattern will not suddenly change. Even the chances of a mere ceasefire are - even when not zero - rather modest. Though if it would occur it would fall apart, eventually, and probably soon. It is inevitable.

Open question for CS community: What to teach from modern parallel algorithms to 2nd CS undergrads? We teach sorting networks (bitonic sort) and boolean circuits (summation, multiplication), which is fine but does not feel very modern. What else to show about parallelism in, say, 2 lectures?

Very interesting (short) paper by Graham Cormode (@grahamrc.bsky.social), "Applications of Sketching and Pathways to Impact", using sketching algos as case study to see how to go from theory to—impactful—practice, and what to keep in mind in the process. (Small) sample below doi.org/10.1145/3584...
Inflict ideas on the next generation. The computer science cur-
riculum is far more dynamic than, say, the mathematics curriculum,
and it is still feasible to include research ideas in undergraduate
classes. There may not be room to go in-depth on cutting edge
ideas, but including a few results from the current century may
help to keep students engaged. Sketches are a good exemplar for
this, since the ideas can fit well into an algorithms or database class,
and illustrate some of the underlying principles and concepts. A
long-term benefit of this approach is that some students may just
remember these ideas after graduation, and be motivated to make
use of them in whatever career they choose to go in to.
Write accessible notes, and put them where people can read
them. While we may think of peer-reviewed academic publications
as the medium for sharing research ideas, these are unfortunately
not the place where practitioners will find them. You can have
more reach by writing accessible notes addressing the software
engineering community. For sketches, we made web pages and
wrote articles in practitioner-focused journals. Today, you should
consider making more use of platforms like medium and substack,
and promoting posts via social media.
