I passed this 1930’s church on Bull Bay Road in Amlwch a few times and just had to take a look. This is the Catholic Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea & St Winefride. It was designed by an Italian architect to look like the upturned hull of a boat reflecting Amlwch’s maritime history.

Yes, I never thought he'd be the only one in the archive! I'm not sure what basis they're using for what location data is or isn't searchable, and there are clearly some search glitches anyway with the current filters (e.g. Scottish regions will get you hits, but the "Scotland" filter gets none).

In the Western Mail a hundred years ago today, a photograph of the WW1 memorial in Nelson (Glamorgan) - unveiled 19 Aug 1926. The report says that 3000 people were there for the ceremony. 56 names from WW1; 25 added for WW2. Details of the WW1 dead - www.nelson-ww1-memorial.org.uk/html/the_nam...

'if Wales faces distinct challenges, why should it continue to accept the rules of a higher education market largely designed in England and for England?' Important. BUT if you only focus on universities' student-focused work you will NEVER sort them out. And NB, research isn't bound by nations.

Sad to hear of the death of Michael Roberts, historian of early modern work and gender. His classic article 'Sickles and Scythes' appeared in HWJ and he co-edited a fine book on gender history. He was an excellent colleague, always supportive, and will be missed. @historyworkshop.org.uk

There's a good recent study of women and the Invasion by Hywel M. Davies that explores how the legend of the women has changed over time and gained salience at times of war. He suggests the 'assault' on a woman was a case of rape. www.uwp.co.uk/book/the-las...

Today sees the start of the Royal Welsh Show! The Show was first held in 1904, at Aberystwyth. It was held annually at different locations, alternating between North and South Wales, until 1963 when its permanent site at Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells was established.
