Why is the answer to employers wanting more work ready graduates always that universities should provide more workplace training, rather than employers providing more training in the workplace?

I'm in about the weirdest archive I've ever been in. Once I'm finished with a document, I have to raise my hand. Someone comes and takes the document away and then gives me my next one. Flashbacks to primary school.

Not reinstating the cap after 2020 was one of the most devastating decisions to hit HE and has absolutely destroyed smaller and mid-level universities.

Britain's universities are changing. Far more of their 18-21yo undergrads will have to live in the parental home. Yet whole regions are becoming subject deserts and are going to have far less HE. So stupid: no plan, no policy, no-one in charge. Dumb as rocks. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Of course in many towns they are also the largest (or close to) employers- not just academics, but all the support staff, catering staff, cleaning staff. All of those thousands of people loosing their jobs would have a huge knock on effect on local economies

It is wild to me how many people there are who are doing "dream" jobs like being a writer, a lawyer, a professor - vocations that require a lot of luck & personal investment to get into, and which have 100s of would-bes for every actual success - who hate their job & want a machine to do it instead

I try not to harbor resentment or regret that my academic training did not lead to a faculty position, but I always feel a little twinge when this comes up. Because it reminds me that I really liked teaching, reading, writing, and even service. It can feel like the jobs go to people who don't.

I'm a precariously employed academic with 2 teaching only jobs, one a zero hours contract. I publish because I want a better job, but I do so on my own, with no support network. It sucks. But I've just seen my work referenced in a book, and it's almost worth the shitness.

Call me Cassandra, but if you make thousands of HEI staff either compulsorily or 'voluntarily' redundant and create conditions in which senior staff take early retirement in an attempt to save more junior colleagues' careers without significant new hiring, a critical loss is exactly what happens.

Working with oral histories of children who were in Cottage Homes in the early twentieth century. One old man said 'we had a sister too, I don't know where she went, we never saw her again'. These stories haven't actually changed as siblings are still split up today.

When mothers admitted their children to the London Foundling Hospital, they often left tokens. Sometimes, just a cut of the child's clothing, as in this case. This child was reclaimed by its mother in 1760. Seeing the fabric in the archive this week was incredible.
