I really think more people should read Jacques Ellul’s “Propaganda: the Formation of Men’s Attitudes.” It’s so good.

The person who imagined that he could not be the victim of propaganda because he could distinguish truth from falsehood, is extremely susceptible to propaganda, because when propaganda does tell the truth, he is then convinced that it is no longer propaganda: moreover, his self-confidence makes him all the more vulnerable to attacks of which he is unaware.

My husband & I cosplayed at Shep & Tali. The only whiskey glass I own has the N7 logo on it. To say Mass Effect WAS my 30s is not much of an overstatement. I didn't get another system until 2018 (I got the 360 in 2011), so though I gamed much less after college, this was always what I returned to.

The neat thing for me: by the time I played it they'd patched 3's ending and also released Citadel and Leviathan so I had a much better experience than the folks who had played each game when they released. I played those games at least 6 times through, and did it again when Legendary released.

6. Mass Effect (All 3 games) I chose Legendary Edition for the survey instead of the individual games because I actually experienced all 3 games at once. I bought a laptop when I went off to college in my 30s, and it came with a free X-Box 360. Wild, right?

ED also uses time in a way that few other games do, returning to levels hundreds of years later to see the inevitable changes that the passage of time will bring. It opened my mind to new dimensions of storytelling, and was fun as hell to boot.

5. Eternal Darkness I thought I was done with Nintendo. I hadn't bothered to get back into it after drifting over to Sony. And then a friend brought over his Gamecube and showed me Eternal Darkness. A game with sanity mechanics that lets you play the final boss as the tutorial? Unbelievable.

4. Ōkami The first console I ever bought for myself was the PS2, and while I enjoyed a lot of games on it, none of them wowed me like Okami. The game just keeps growing and changing well beyond what you expect in a fantasy RPG. Time travel? Spaceships??? Fucking insane and beautifully animated too.

It's the only known instance after their divorce of my mother & father actually working together on a present. He saw me playing DKC in Sears, so he, Mom, & my uncle all joined forces to buy me a small TV & my own SNES with DKC for Christmas. This would cement gaming as important for my whole teens.

3. Donkey Kong Country Technically 2nd if we're going autobiographically, DKC is the one game on this list that made me me despite not being a favorite game. But as a poor kid with divorced parents and a bus pass, my favorite thing to do with middle school summers involved video games.
