Knuckleheads produce excess sugar, which causes osmotic rupture (cracks) in the outer skin. The rupture heals with some scar tissue, producing the lumps & bumps. But certain bacteria & viruses can produce similar ruptures when introduced by small insects feeding on the sugars in the pumpkin.

What I am more interested in is how people are going to continue this trope into the future, because it is obviously becoming a hallmark of today's horror. When people look back at the 2020s they're going to be talking about horror movies written by comedians about people forced to kill themselves.

The obvious connotation is we're in a society that can't stop doing things that harm us all. Lots of these movies mirror themes of addiction and obsession. A good chunk of these scenes have people willing or pleased to hurt themselves. Something something enthusiastic participants of our own demise.

I know plenty of men who have answered that wall for themselves and grown into kind, generous, thoughtful and strong adults. I am just sad we’re still in a place where the boys who couldnt face that wall arbitrarily placed there by generations before them had to punish women for it.

Just to be clear I feel genuinely sorry for boys who have to prove they are men before they’ve even figured out what that means themselves. I feel terrible that boys have to grow up threatened by femininity catching up to them unless they can prove themselves. Like a chase to escape it.
