What a surprise, the organizers of the covid cautious dyke bar hated the article, rejected its framing, and is defending their covid cautious patrons and performers. Anyone who joined in on the viral harassment campaign started by Jesse Singal wanna say oops or…? recorder.com/2026/09/24/g...
Current and former owners of Last Ditch could not be reached by phone, email or social media. However, Last Ditch did share on Instagram that the Globe story allegedly misconstrued statements from Noire, and urged community members to stop harassing Noire.
"It is neither productive, progressive, nor valiant to attack a Black patron. He has been a collaborator and performer of Last Ditch for a while, and he deserves to speak his mind about accountability and repair from the bar," the Last Ditch statement reads. "There are so many misconceptions due to the disorganization of the Globe article. He did not call for the bar to be firebombed. Further, he did not disparage the owner for being homeless.
"As a result of this abysmal journalism, he has been getting additional threats, slurs, harassment, and is being reported to the police over something he did not do," Last Ditch continued. "This is not supporting us at Last Ditch, and it is, at its core, anti-Blackness hysteria."

I really wish that Covid hadn’t happened, but it did, and either we adapt to the reality that it makes some people permanently sick and at risk, and they still deserve humanity, or we keep scapegoating and ostracizing anyone who points that fact out, anyone who has to survive it, anyone broken by it

infuriating to see so many posts dismissing those calling for masks becuase the mask is not a systemic solution, when the only other people who showed up to beg for systemic solutions the public meetings i attended were also chronically ill & disabled people (+ woefully few allies) in masks 🤔

I think something important to highlight here is that when people say “well I don’t know anyone with long covid” they are wrong. Long covid doesn’t always look like the me/CFS variety that gives you fatigue and brain fog. It can act like a starting gun in your body for latent genetic issues.

This is from after passage, when they were setting up a counterterrorism center with the FBI and CIA. What was put in place during those years is haunting us now.
From February 15, 2003 star tribune

The new terrorism center seeks to blunt that idea.
Bush said the FBI and CIA are cooperating as never before, and the FBI in particular
"now understands that we're at war, and the first responsibility of an incredibly important agency — the FBI — is to prevent the enemy from hitting us and hurung us.
Civil liberties and privacy groups have raised concerns about the CIA working so closely with the FBI, especially with the CIA chief overseeing any domestic intelligence operations
Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, the senior Democrat on the Senate Govemmen-tal Affairs Committee, said Friday at a hearing that there are serious questions about "the wisdom of expanding the role of the director of central intelligence in domestic intelligence."
The Bush administration said all current privacy and legal protections will apply to the new center, which will become a key part of the new Homeland Security Department.

If you’re younger than I am (more people every day…) you may not be aware that people were very concerned about civil liberties being eroded by the legislation that passed establishing the Department of Homeland Security. Even those who voted for it expressed concern.
From just before the vote (Oct 29 2002, star tribune)

Civil liberties vs. homeland security: Coleman, Wellstone and Mondale all support both civil liberties and homeland security. But when they clash, Coleman has been on the side of most Republicans, who say that the post-Sept. 11 emergency justifies tough measures, even if they make civil libertarians nervous.
Wellstone and Mondale have leaned strongly the other way. Mondale's most recent opinion piece in the Star Trib-une, published in December 2001 after Attorney General John Ashcroft had made some of his proposals, argued that every time - from the Alien and Sedition Acts of the early republic to the red scares of the 20th century - Americans have curtailed civil liberties in the name of security, it has turned out to be a bad idea.
"We can be vigilant and decisive without giving in to fear," Mondale wrote. "We can do everything we need to do to protect ourselves within our Constitution, and we will bestronger if we do so. For history has taught us over and over again that the rule of law, openness and tolerance will prevail over injustice, oppression and hate.
