This gave me a good laugh. (from @accordionguy.bsky.social 's "Saturday Picdump" of tech-related memes, cartoons, etc.)
A military execution by firing squad. The condemned person is tied to a wooden post in front of a wall. The condemned man is covered in black ink, with overspray on the wall behind him leaving a negative shadow on the wall. Ten or so feet in front of the prisoner, a large squid lays on the ground, a spray of squid ink stretching between it and the prison.

To one side, two soldiers stand. One, an officer, holds a piece of paper in his hands, looking at it closely.

My biggest worry is that in both NZ and the US Labour/Democrats will win the November election then do fuck all with it. They think centrism offends no one, but it also achieves nothing.

People are going to clown on this but we need to remember that planning for local context is important: a city with Los Angeles, California’s semi-arid Mediterranean climate only gets sunshine ~300 days a year; so it’s important to make sure you can never ever find shade in the middle of the day.

I’ll never agree with the death penalty but what really blows my mind is that Christa Pike was sentenced in 1996. She’s been on death row for 30 years then suddenly they decide now’s the time. Did someone drop her file down the back of the cabinet?

Why is Hipkins *like* this?? Generational level loser "No one else should be lining up jobs [other than me]" is outrageous win the election first, mate. Maybe ceasing your attacks on women in the Green Party could help with that
article thumbnail on Stuff

headline:

Hipkins slams Swarbrick for lining up jobs ‘before anyone has even voted’text from Stuff article

"He criticised Swarbrick for listing ministries, saying she had gotten ahead of herself.

"No one should be measuring up the Beehive for new curtains just yet. There is still a lot of campaigning to go. We we should all be focused right now on earning the votes and the trust of New Zealanders, not deciding what jobs we're going to have before anybody has even voted," he said.

Although, Hipkins did say what job he and Labour finance spokesperson Barbara Edmonds would have.

"I will be the prime minister. Barbara Edmonds will be the minister of finance. Those are non-negotiables for the Labour Party. No one else should be lining up for jobs yet until we see what the voters choose," he said."

#NZpol Saw this excellent quote-reply to Simeon Brown’s latest attack on Labour. Worth sharing.
David Peez @RebelEkonomista

"The truck driver in Pakuranga helps pay off a lawyer's loan." No, Simeon. He doesn't. Not a cent.

When the government lends a student money, it creates the dollars and credits their account. No tradie's tax was collected and posted to a law degree. When the graduate repays, those dollars are deleted, drained back out like tax. They don't land in the truck driver's pocket either.

So nobody foots the bill. The worker and the graduate aren't on opposite sides of a ledger. Setting them against each other is the trick, and it runs on the same myth as "add it to the tab", that the government is a household counting coins. It issues the currency. The real limits are real resources and inflation, not a truck driver's tax bill.

"Someone always pays." Sure. Just never the person you keep pointing at.

Meanwhile in NZ the 26km Warkworth to Te Hana expressway costs the Crown of $3.6 billion (rising to 9b over the years) & a return of 0.70cents per dollar. So we would rather build loss making roads than fund wealth creating artists. We are doing it all wrong.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

The second panel zooms in on Sarah's face. She is annoyed. She says, "What if I don't listen to you?"
The third panel shows the brain smiling.
The fourth panel shows the brain reaching towards a lever. The brain says, "I'LL MAKE YOU."

Blood boys OVER we’re out here Renfieldmaxxing now
He’s on a quest to live forever.
Mr. Emanuel’s morning routine involves waking up at 4 a.m., stretching for 40 minutes and then doing breath work, sauna, meditation, an ice plunge and infrared light therapy before ingesting a protein shake and a cup of live worms to fight off “the bad bacteria in my gut.” He describes a recent lunch with his old CAA boss, Michael Ovitz. Mr. Emanuel writes: “He goes to the gym; he thinks that means he’s taking care of himself. But it doesn’t. I scold him. He hasn’t gotten his blood work done in years, he isn’t doing ice plunges, he isn’t doing daily breath work, he isn’t fasting. And he needs to be eating worms.”
