Could this be the most important building in London this century? I think so! It’s a return to using stone structurally to build a 10 storey tower and hugely reducing the carbon impact of building. By Groupwork and Webb Yates engineers, Petra Heights on Finchley Road is monumental in so many ways 🧵
A view of the Finchley Road. A parade of shops housed in an early 20th Century terrace is on the left and next to these is a block composed of two towers constructed in a square grid pattern using beams of red coloured stone. Next to this spectacular building is a boring ‘council architect’ late 29th century residential block.

I'm so disappointed and heartbroken at what is happening at Nottingham. I loved working there, first as a biology postdoc, then as a librarian. It's sad to see senior management is so keen to destroy everything that made it beautiful.

Prehistoric fridge! This approximately 4,000-year-old storage vessel once served as a kind of fridge. It was kept in a pit and sealed with a wooden lid, likely to store perishable food. Unfortunately, there weren't any residues left to tell us exactly what was stored inside. 🧵1/2 📷 me
A large, coarse pottery vessel with a rounded body, a wide opening, and a decorative band of regularly spaced perforations around its upper section. The beige surface is cracked and uneven, and the vessel is displayed against a dark background.

This beautifully detailed silver and gilt pyxis (lidded box) was probably made in a Greek workshop in Apulia, eventually deposited in an #Etruscan tomb. How do we know? It’s inscribed with the Etruscan word ‘śuthina’ (‘for the tomb’), marking it as the property of the deceased. 🏺 1/ 📸 me
Silver and gilt pyxis (box with lid), part of a group of three items known as the Bolsena silver. The bands of ornament on the box and alternate leaves on the pointed lid have gilding. The inscription written on the side of the cylindrical box in Etruscan must have been added subsequently. It reads śuthina, meaning "of [for] the tomb" suggesting that the objects were acquired by an Etruscan and buried with him.

The pyxis itself was originally manufactured as a luxury item in Apulia (southern Italy), likely in a Greek workshop. Marking an item as śuthina served a religious function in Etruscan burial practices. It legally and spiritually designated the luxury object as property of the deceased and the underworld deities. Once marked "for the tomb," the item was consecrated and could never be reused or stolen for the world of the living.

Height: with cover 3 5/16 in. (8.4 cm)

I would hazard neither. I said yesterday that gender rarely defines script. But age can. This is by someone learning to write. I suspect that this is an elder sister to the future archbishop. We know his siblings did not live to adulthood, and so it could have passed to him after her premature death

On the importance of asking the right questions in politics.
We are measurably lonelier. We feel less productive, and yet more burnt out. We're less satisfied in our jobs. We are less fulfilled in our personal lives. We're taking up fewer hobbies. Engaging in less culture and art. We miss our real communities. But we're going out less. Our trust in our institutions has plummeted. We're having fewer kids. We're politically more volatile. We're believing more lies. A younger generation is going on fewer dates. And they have fewer friends. Opportunities for human contact are shrinking.
Anxiety is up, and yes, that overall happiness metric is falling.
Sorry to be a downer, but then you knew all that already. We all feel it.
Instead, we are pursuing a race to "growth". But what kind of growth, and to what end? An AI data centre in a hollowed-out postindustrial community might provide 30-odd jobs and create numerical growth on a Treasury spreadsheet but does it materially address the lack of meaning, purpose or agency many feel in their lives?
