WORLD-FIRST: Ground-breaking research published today in the Ornithologist Journal has, for the first time, translated common UK bird vocalisations into equivalent phrases in the human language. The results tell us a lot! Extracts below... 🧵
The front cover of a scientific journal titled Ornithologist, dated 1 April 2025. The main headline reads: “BIRDS: DECODED - Groundbreaking New Science.” Below that, a subheading says: “What are the UK’s birds really saying? Pioneering new research provides the answers.”

Happy World Poetry Day to all who celebrate. If you’re interested in writing poetry yourself, I hope this poem will be of some use.
Ten Rules for Aspiring Poets

1. Poetry does not have to rhyme.
Well, at least not all the time always.

2. Metaphors can lend a poem power
     (but mixing them isn’t good).
Should they start to fly in all directions,
      nip them in the bud.

3. Focus and concentration
     are important skills to hone.
Close the door. Turn off the wi-fi.
Don’t get distracted by your ph

4. Avoid clichés like the plague.

5. Don’t write stuff that’s a bit vague.

6. The use of unnecessarily long words
     may result in reader alienation.
     Curb your sesquipedalianism
     to obviate any obfuscation.

7. Always proof-read you’re work.
Accuracy can be it’s own reward!
     And remember that the penis
     mightier than the sword.

8. Check haiku closely
for lines which have too few
     or too many syllables.

9. Never ever follow rules.

The anecdotal evidence of Taylorism in UK education is rising. This is terrible news for both students and teachers. There is a crucial difference between: •Teaching to students (linear and deterministic), and •Teaching with them (circular and emergent). #UKEd #EduSky #SciTeachUK
Reflecting on conversations with the RSC trainees this week it was clear they are getting very different experiences in schools and not all of them are positive. Here are a few things I was told by trainees in schools just now.
- Lessons can only be taken directly from the centrally designed scheme of work. Regular inspections from the school and trust to check fidelity of these even down to the lesson (e.g. they look at the scheme of work and say you should be on lesson 4.4 but say you are on lesson 4.2 then that is a problem).
-Trainees told that students are not allowed to ask questions in class. No, not even your super curious Y7s. They should accept the knowledge being presented by the teacher.
-Trainees told not to ask the class or individual pupils questions. Questions can only be asked during particular lesson segments and then must be whole class and answered on mini whiteboards.

For some of the trainees this means that they could never try out any of the experiments they did with me at STEM learning because it’s not in their SoW and not sanctioned by their trust. Many were frustrated by this. I encouraged them to speak up for education as an experience, not just a slog through content.

Reading between the lines I know why some of these measures have been put in place, lack of resources, non specialist teachers and making it easy for supply teachers joining. But it is putting committed young teachers off. What can we do about the relentless creep of “curriculum delivery” rather than teaching?

Broadly correct: measles is MUCH more contagious than flu, common cold, covid etc. each infected person infects, on average, >10 people if all are unvaxed. If there were 48 confirmed cases in Texas 2 days ago there are likely hundreds by now, taking account of vaccination rates and under-reporting.
