If I could rewrite Early Years policy tomorrow, I’d start here. Some things need to go. Some need to change and some we need to be brave enough to bring back. Children are more than data, targets and percentages. Protect play. Respect development. Put children first. What would you change?

Joy in the early years isn’t a fluffy extra. Fredrickson (2001), King et al. (2015), Wu et al. (2021) and Yogman et al. (2018) give us the evidence: positive emotions, relationships and play matter for learning and development. Children only get one childhood. Joy matters.

A bit of fun on a Tuesday evening. Could you imagine if this actually happened? 😂 Being appointed as Minister for Play Imagine putting play, joy, relationships and childhood at the heart of government policy. Now that would be something worth getting excited about. A person can dream! 🎈

There has been a lot of positive change in early childhood over the past few years. But one measure still needs to go: the Good Level of Development. It’s time to stop chasing a number and start asking whether children are truly thriving. #EarlyYears #ChildhoodFirst

Today I posted an open letter to the Prime Minister. Not a letter of criticism, but one of hope. It’s time to place early childhood at the heart of government. If we truly want to transform Britain, we must begin with our youngest children. #EarlyYears #EarlyChildhood

Aaron Bradbury: The problem isn’t play – it’s the system - Nursery World
‘Play matters’ has become one of the most repeated phrases in early childhood, but the problem is the system does not allow play to happen in the way young children need, says Dr Aaron Bradbury.

If we want more people to join the Early Years workforce, we need to bring back the JOY. Not the paperwork. Not the pressure. Not the constant proving. The joy of being with children. Play. Development. Connection. Pay matters. But so do conditions. We can change this. #EarlyYears #PlayMatters
