These turkey tail mushrooms were keeping the woods quiet and peaceful today while they cleaned up a storm-downed tree. I was lucky that I got to spend part of the afternoon interviewing them!
Rippling mushrooms crowd together on a dead tree. The mushrooms have scalloped edges and are dry but soft to the touch.

These Missouri Republicans don't give up easily. They also love to fight our election results, because they believe that we the people make "bad" decisions, and they know better than we do what's "good" for us. To protect our initiative and referendum process, vote yes on Amendment 6!

I was lucky--my aunt Esther was a computer whiz in the 1960's-70's Psychology Department at the University of Illinois, so my first computer took up a whole room, and could play Tic-Tac-Toe without losing once. I was very impressed.

It's #Caturday, so Coco is here with a helpful tip for you. Never let your dentist cut your hair.
A velvety black cat (named Coco) is missing a square inch of his beautiful glossy coat across one upper arm. His dentist (aka the Vet) shaved him for an IV. Coco looks glum.

Fabulous Ice Age spear thrower handle carved in the form of an animal. Known as the ‘Creeping Hyena’ it was carved from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago. The shaft is missing, but the hook to propel the spear is still visible. From La Madeleine rock shelter, France. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an Upper Paleolithic spear-thrower (also known as an atlatl) carved in the form of a crouching animal, viewed in profile with head to left. Its head and neck are extended forward, low to the ground, and its legs are tucked beneath its body. It has a long downward curved tail, the pointed lower end of which ends beneath the body at lower right, forming the hook against which the tail end of the spear rests. The shaft of the spear thrower is missing. The ivory is a warm beige colour and is cracked with age in places. The sculpture is mounted on a thin metal support in a museum display case. It was found in La Madeleine rock shelter, Tursac, Dordogne, France. I saw this spear thrower on display at the Pompidou Centre, on loan from the National Prehistory Museum in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.

“Three days heat, after five days rain.” A poem by Gary Snyder.
Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout

BY GARY SNYDER

Down valley a smoke haze
Three days heat, after five days rain
Pitch glows on the fir-cones
Across rocks and meadows
Swarms of new flies.

I cannot remember things I once read
A few friends, but they are in cities.
Drinking cold snow-water from a tin cup
Looking down for miles
Through high still air.

Harpers Ferry, almost heaven! I am afraid of heights but did walk across the railroad bridge trail, and I was fine. Can you hear the cicadas ringing?
The Potomac River and the Shenandoah River come together between dark shale mountains in their summertime plumage. The pilings that supported a series of old bridges are still in midriver, and plants now cover them. The Shenandoah River ripples around partly-submerged stones as it flows into the Potomac. A green mountain of slate rises almost vertically at the river's edge. It's a warm day, and cicadas are ringing.
