I got to share my first two publications this year! They’re very different pieces—worlds, genres, intentions—but equally speculative and moody. (links below)

The story of the Klamath River might just be our favourite things that happened this year. After decades of activism by the Karuk and Yurok tribes, the river was finally freed of four huge dams, ahead of schedule and on budget. buff.ly/4gd6E1b #ShareGoodNewsToo

'Anything that can be built can be taken down': The largest dam removal in US history is complete – what happens next?
The Klamath River is free of four huge dams for the first time in generations. But for the Yurok tribe, the river's restoration is only just beginning – starting with 18 billion seeds.

Well, this was a bit surprising. First, I have been going to Yolo Bypass near Davis, CA very very often and always dream of getting a good raptor pic with the "Hunter Check Station" sign. And I got one today of a kestrel sitting on that sign. Yes, this is a hunter check station.
Picture of an American Kstrel holding something in its talons while perched on a large rectangular wooden sign that reads "HUNTER CHECK STATION" in large yellow letters. The sign also has a yellow arrow pointing up. There is blue sky behind the sign and kestrel at the top of the picture and brown platns / grasses behind the sign in the lower part of the picture. The sigs woos is mostly dark brown with some lighter regions. The sign is held up by two large wooden posts at each end.

(Last digression before I get to work for the day!) Yes! Trust that authors are doing things on purpose. :) From Eco's own notes in the appendix of THE NAME OF THE ROSE: he's testing you with those first hundred pages. If you love it, then continue! If not, then stop!
But there was another reason for including those long didactic passages. After reading the manuscript, my friends and editors suggested I abbreviate the first hundred pages, which they found very difficult and demanding. Without thinking twice, I refused, because, as I insisted, if somebody wanted to enter the abbey and live there for seven days, he had to accept the abbey's own pace. If he could not, he would never manage to read the whole book. Therefore those first hundred pages are like a penance or an initiation, and if someone does not like them, so much the worse for him. He can stay at the foot of the hill.

Naturalists have done this since Darwin's time but gatekeeping in science means that vast collective knowledge is not recognized or dismissed as 'amateur'.

FF#22 Story Preview: "Calling from the Payphone at the Teleporter Depot" by @othermarshes.bsky.social. Ever find yourself waiting in the teleportation line and end up having to comfort the crying kid ahead of you? And it makes you really think about your life? Then this one might be your jam.
I said, it doesn’t hurt. I’ve teleported plenty of times, and it’s never hurt me before.

One of my favourite things about doing breeding bird surveys is catching the sunrise in June. This was taken just after 4 o’clock this morning and was worth the 3 AM wake up. 🌿
A wedge of orange sky glows above the horizon and is reflected in the Still waters of Lake Winnipeg at sunrise. Slate gray clouds fill the rest of the sky at early morning.
