With throats unslaked, with black lips baked,
We could nor laugh nor wail;
Through utter drought all dumb we stood!

much as the murder of Brianna Ghey mysteriously stopped being about the climate of transphobia in the UK and became about teen access to social media, the death of Jason Arday is, equally mysteriously, no longer about racism and is becoming about free speech in academia

Many people asked how Arday was able to become an academic at Cambridge. Not nearly enough people have asked how the hell Cofnas was able to become an academic at Cambridge. "We know that stereotypes generally have a basis in reality" is something you'd expect from a 19th century phrenologist.

"yes, I might hold racist beliefs, but is it fair to call me a racist"
I’m an easy scapegoat because I hold views about race that are controversial and easily misunderstood. I argue that differences between ancestral populations aren’t entirely due to environmental forces, and that some group disparities stem from natural differences for which no one is to blame. I made a widely quoted statement: “Under a colorblind system that judged applicants only by academic qualifications, blacks would make up 0.7% of Harvard students.” That sentence has been cited repeatedly as evidence that I’m a racist.

Durkheim taught us that suicide is never just a personal/individual issue, it always has social/cultural/political causes. Over the next few days journalists will try to remove or minimise the direct media/political causes of Jason Arday’s death and try to individualise it. We must not let them.

Think of all the mediocre white men with their plagiarism/stealing student work/sexual harassment who kept their jobs or quietly retired but are alive. Jason Arday’s situation did NOT have to play out or end this way, no matter his errors. And the media and everyone with a hot take is responsible.
