As part of the project “Islands of Accessibility” I created a A3 hand-built Art Book. I love the experience of flipping through such a large book and uncovering each page. This link will lead to a PDF of the book. It’s quite a short book. heyzine.com/flip-book/37...

I’ve spent the last year working on a project called “Islands of Accessibility”. It seeks to highlight the experience of non-drivers in a world not designed for them. I’ve started an archive space on instagram if you fancy following along there. www.instagram.com/islands_of_a... #speiregorm
Black and white image of a tree with lichen in an urban outdoor space. The following words are laid over the image in an opaque manner.

Why you should follow Islands of Accessibility?

You love Cork!
You care about people, especially people who are seldom heard in decision-making.
You care about our future, our descendants, and climate change.
You are a transport nerd who would like to see people move more gently through the world.
You like little stories and other viewpoints.
You like being surprised!

Someone (me) took way too long to pull this one down from my dusty to-be-read pile. An incredibly accessible rad so I shouldn’t have let myself be put off: “Theory as Liberatory Practice” and “Language” stand out chapters for me that I will revisiting over and over again #booksky

Imagine if instead of providing passenger ferry service we just made everyone own their own small boats. It would be chaos and totally unsafe on days like today. And obviously not everyone could afford one. Plus imagine the dock space required! But that’s basically what we do with cars 🤣

My mother in law always asked my partner to get Christmas presents from her for the kids: “You know what they want” She died suddenly in December 2023. On Christmas Day we opened her last presents to the kids without her there. A strange but poignant moment. Give future you a gift from past you.

This breaks my heart: Spanish bluebells (left) spreading out of gardens into the wild, now a common sight across Ireland. Native bluebells (right) are so lovely, but will be pushed out. Why are non-native species known to be invasive STILL being sold in garden centres?

So it’s “Bad Friday” in our house: a new tradition a bit like the way Festivus is a holiday for the rest of us. You have to think up bad things to do to those you love: Putting blackberry thorns in your frenemy’s bed, that kind of thing… so much joy for two little girls! #Speirgorm

How do you holiday when you don’t drive? For most, people it will be hopping on a flight to a place that has active or sustainable transport. We are really missing a beat when it comes to tourism without a car through lack of safe connections.

Long quote, including “I’m writing because I’m hoping the people who read it don’t need dollop of hope or good endings, but our reading so that they’ll know what to fight, and fight, even when the fight seems hopeless.”
