📢New paper in @thejop.bsky.social on the reciprocal nature of citizens’ support for democratic transgressions. Together with Hannah Werner & @annakern.bsky.social , we show that when confronted with violations by political opponents, citizens’ support for transgressions by their own side doubles!

🇪🇺 What drives the European Commission's growing power? Fabio Franchino, @martami.bsky.social & @giovannipagano.bsky.social study 9000+ EU laws: Parliament's involvement is the strongest driver, more so when it's ideologically closer to the Commission than the Council is. 🔗 doi.org/10.1080/0140...
Description of the article "A supranational alliance: the empowerment of the European Commission (1958–2019)" by Fabio Franchino, Marta Migliorati and Giovanni Pagano, published online first in West European Politics. The first page shows the title, authors and abstract, with the main argument and findings highlighted.
Figure 1. Line chart of the Commission's mean executive discretion per year and the number of laws adopted, from 1958 to 2019. Apart from volatility in the early years, discretion follows a consistent upward trend, while the number of laws declines after the 1980s.
Figure 2. Plot of the average marginal effects of the explanatory factors on the Commission's executive discretion. Parliamentary involvement has the largest positive effect; Council majority voting, an ideologically allied Parliament, non-compliance and Council divisiveness also raise discretion, while agency drift between Council and Commission lowers it.

Yes, great poster! But was it successful? Not really - judging from the results of the federal election in 1930. SPD: 24.5% (-5.3); NSDAP: 18.3 (+15.5)...

Veeeeeeery tempted, Tim, veeeeeery tempted! If only we had more time... But the invitation is duly noted, and a note that's been saved to the long-term memory section of my German brain will stay there for a long time - and can easily be activated should the occasion of a UK trip arise!

I like how the Guardian still talks about things like a "hung parliament", which are clearly only a thing in FPTP systems, when discussing the effects a transition to various PR electoral systems would have on Britain. Old habits die hard, it seems

Depends on how you want to go. By (e-)bike maybe? There is a very cool bike trail from Trieste to Villach and another one from Villach to Vienna. Or is that too middle class for you...?
110
Oliver Treib @olivertreib.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
True! (But Austria, or rather: Vienna, is still a great place to live!)
110
Oliver Treib @olivertreib.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Maybe you could just move to Austria to satisfy your ego. There, people would adress you as "Herr Magister" once you have completed your Master's.
110
Oliver Treib @olivertreib.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
In Germany and Austria, you wouldn't even need a PhD yourself. As your wife is "Frau Doktor", you as her spouse could also be addressed as "Herr Doktor". (It of course used to be the other way round, mostly used for wives of local GPs in small villages, but still...)
100
Oliver Treib @olivertreib.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Honestly, it's a huge step and you should consider it very carefully. It's a big commitment, takes a looooot of stamina, and even with funding, it will take a heavy toll on your work-life balance. Do you really want to invest so much, just to be called "Herr Doktor" next time you go to Germany?...
