Created during her influential New York years while living with photographer Alfred Stieglitz, the painting belongs to a series of works where O'Keeffe actively experimented with rhythmic abstraction. She was heavily inspired by the theories of Russian Expressionist painter Wassily Kandinsky, specifically his 1912 treatise Concerning the Spiritual in Art. Kandinsky argued that visual artists should emulate music to achieve pure emotional and spiritual expression free from literal objects. Reflecting on this creative liberation, O'Keeffe famously noted:

"I found that I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way—things that I had no words for."

Bands of deep blue, rich black, and vibrant green extend diagonally from the bottom. They are juxtaposed against rippling white and pale blue forms that float like fluid waves, blowing petals, or leaves.
