a really good rule of thumb I try to keep in mind with stuff like this (and still sometimes failing, for sure) is that people I don't like or agree with are also still real humans who experience interiority and are capable of recognizing and making jokes

i resent how there's a stable of a couple dozen dudes whose whole thing is 'has a racist blog' & they regularly get mainstream newspaper and magazine profiles. i have trouble keeping track of them all, i'm like 'what did he do again' & check his wikipedia & it's ah, has a racist blog, that's all

Someone told an American - who repeated it back to me - that Irish dancing came from ‘during colonialism’ people trying to hide when they were dancing in bars - cos the Brits didn’t like it - so they didn’t move their arms incase soldiers were looking through windows. Best laugh i’d had in ages!

A new Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology has just been published, in which it is claimed that the human species is polytypic: not only is race biologically meaningful but the races are distinct enough to be considered subspecies. Published by Elgar. In 2026.
Chapters in Part III take stock of the current state of evolutionary psychology, by casting wider attention to other social and behavioral sciences and assessing the field's influence on them. In Chapter 11 ('Evolutionary psychology and anthropology'), Heiner Rindermann identifies three major forces that oppose scientific anthropology: Religion, National Socialism ('Nazism'), and woke leftist ideology. Ironically, in this sense, woke left ideologues, who include most anthropologists themselves, geneticists, and other university academics, share much in common with the Nazis in their common opposition to scientific anthropology.
Rindermann's extensive review of the literature leaves no doubt that humans are genetically polytypic and contain different biological races or 'subspecies' At the end of the chapter, Rindermann delivers devastating rebuttals to all potential arguments against the notion of races/subspecies among humans.

As long as Timothy and Lam Are still on the front bench I don't think it's that strong a signal.

I'm sure Badenoch has direct experience of racism, but she's not shown much evidence that her party takes it seriously, and this is not a meaningful "first step to recalibrating the conversation away from ethno-nationalism" imo.

Timothy and Lam are still on the front bench, she's not rolled back the commitment to abolish the PSED or tripling stop and search either. This is less than the minimum and she's bodged it.
Twlldun saying that "Maturity is resisting the urge for a gotcha about the comments regarding Barnes and Wright, and recognising that instead she’s said something that is necessary to be said, and this is a first step to recalibrating the conversation away from ethno-nationalism."

Barnes, like every black player of his generation, suffered horrendous racist abuse. I'm glad Badenoch is going after Reform on this, but it's remarkable how little she knows or cares about the people she uses to try and win points.

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

I am not very worried about about the Tory Tapestry’s misuse of “doth”. What worries me much more is this sequence of panels which seems to show a small boat full of brown-skinned people followed by a plague of rats running riot and then a lot of dead white people labelled tax payers.
Detail from Conservative Party mock Bayeux Tapestry showing 1. A boat full of brown skinned people. 2. Enormous rats chasing cats. 3. White-skinned “tax payers” dead in the streets.

The issue with "monsters are marginalized people in fantasy clothes" is that it ends up with things like people making orcs more explicitly like people from IRL sub-Saharan Africa. "There's kind of a racist subtext with orcs, so we've fixed it by making them H. Rider Haggard Zulus." Which, um.

I'm not sure what's supposed to be going on with the archer figure here, but I would have left it out.
A figure with an exaggerated long nose and pointed ears fires arrows into a balding peasant. The peasant has "Tax Payer" written on their tunic as though the tapestry was made by Ben Garrison.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.

UAE officials have warned the UK government that the severity of Man City's punishment could undermine their appetite for future grand-scale commitments in Britain, according to people familiar with the matter
They consider the Premier League's actions to have an influence on the bilateral state relationship, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing undisclosed information
The extraordinary pressure comes after Andy Burnham faced criticism, including from within government, for saying Man City's Abu Dhabi owners should not be disqualified specifically because of the investment they bring to Britain

I think this specific formulation of racism is a limiter for Reform tbh. I can see a lot of people embracing the idea of a common national culture specific to England, but in the end Reform need to appeal to British civic-nationalism to win a GE and this ethno-nationalist stuff risks derailing that.

An account called Chuck H Beagle, that like Margaret Cutting claimed to have been a Jamaican who was in the RAF alongside her husband in Bosnia and Kosovo. Said a lot of anti-black racial slurs under the protection of a black identity and really hated the Labour left.

There are NOT machine-made clothes. If there were, your clothes would be made in the country you live in (where the customers are), or in China (where machines are cheap). They’re made in Bangladesh or India or Indonesia because that’s where the LABOUR is cheap. Your clothes are made by people.
Joyce Carol Oates says: “This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to
different consumers.“
