On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States

#Justread Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. Was best described by someone else as “A novel length Hieronymus Bosch painting”. Didn’t love it but it might be worth a second look down the road - 2.5/5

Many thanks to the Toronto Star for inadvertently showing us why we should all use the Oxford Comma. Apparently Sylvia had some, let's say, complicated hobbies:
Headline from the Toronto Star:

The latest historical fiction
books take inspiration from
Sylvia Plath, a New York
vigilante and Shah of Iran

We review ‘Daffodil Days,’ ‘Lady X,’ ‘Love Lane’ and
‘Mistress of the Persian Boarding House.

Orson Welles: I worked with Grogu. Not in film you see but on the stage. Brilliant performer but a cruel disgusting wretch of a soul. Interviewer: Pourrions-nous parler de Citizen Kane à la place, s'il vous plaît ? Welles: yes he did sell out his friends to HUAC, I will never forgive him for that

This 1952 memo from the Pentagon UFO files is superb There is no point preparing for aliens ‘because no one of consequence is going to take this rubbish seriously unless it happens. At that point, our policy will be determined in the traditional manner of grand panic.’ 🤣 www.war.gov/medialink/uf...
There likely is nothing to be done at the moment to prepare for these possibilities (the only body of writing on the subject available in an emergency is science fiction), because no one of consequence is going to take this rubbish seriously unless it happens. At that point, our policy will be determined in the traditional manner of grand panic.

Today’s poem is called ‘The Day My Dog Spontaneously Combusted’.
The Day My Dog
Spontaneously Combusted

there he was –
chasing sticks,
doing tricks,
and all that stuff

next minute, woof

Let's Not Play Frisbee With That Poet Anymore
LET'S NOT PLAY FRISBEE WITH THAT POET ANYMORE.

[This is a comic strip, with a poem laid over it. On each panel a new line of the poem is written. The scene is a park, in the summer. A man in a trenchcoat - implicitly Philip Larkin - stands folorn, motionless, looking at people throwing a frisbee. It becomes apparent as the comic progresses that they are trying to play frisbee with him. He stand stock still for the whole comic, watching the frisbee as, panel by panel it soars closer and closer to him].

After contemplating the approaching frisbee for two silent panels, Philip begins his thoughts:

Unloosed, unheralded,
You soar toward me
Across the dying afternoon.

bright disc of childhood,
Long since thrown wide
Of Youth's green imaginings,

Your slow declining arc
Figures a sky-written truth:
We will all succumb, and soon

To earth's hard oblivion.

[The frisbee hits Philip on the head with a resounding DONK. He falls backwards, to the ground.

[Ends]

Annual reminder of how many days there are in each month.
Mnemonic

Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November.
Unless a leap year is its fate,
February hath twenty-eight.
All the rest hath three days more,
excepting January,
which hath six thousand,
one hundred and eighty-four.

Just waited 37 minutes for an F3 bus (supposed to come every 15 to 20 minutes). When it did show up, there was no number displayed- we had to ask the driver. #Busconnects is an absolute joke.

In a surprise victory, crafty Retiarius nets mighty Murmillo! Retiarius will proceed to the next round. But first... Today's match: ♥️Like for THRAEX ♻️RT for SCISSOR
Illustration of two Roman gladiators facing each other. On the left is Thraex, spry and lightly armored with a helmet, arm padding, shin guard, small square shield and a curved sword for reaching around and stabbing opponents in the back. He is poised like a scorpion. On the right is Scissor, heavily armored with a fish mail coat, shin guards, and both arms encased in metal with blades on the end which are raised over his head.

In 1968, a small group of Irish people saw suffering and famine in Biafra, and they didn’t wait for the world to act. Our community has grown, but our mission remains the same - because ending extreme poverty, wherever it is in the world, is our Concern. #ItsOurConcern #ConcernWorldwide

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Title:
SOME GRAMMATICAL VOICES FOR USE IN SCIENTIFIC WRITING

ACTIVE VOICE
e.g.
Our team collected samples and then we tested them.

CLICKBAIT VOICE
e.g.
We collected some samples...
You won't believe what happened next!

PASSIVE VOICE
e.g.
Samples were collected and tested.

HAIKU VOICE
e.g.
Quiet science lab.
Workers arrive with samples.
The testing begins.

PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE VOICE
e.g. We did all the collecting and testing.
No need to thank us.
Just doing our job.

CONSPIRACY VOICE
e.g.
Mysterious "Samples" were harvested and covertly "tested" by so-called scientists.

Very sad to see the poet and general sharp observer of life Pat Ingoldsby has died. So, as he prepared for this event, here's to Pat. 🥃
Poem by Pat Ingoldsby
A Message For When I Am Gone

Ireland

It is little or no favours
you ever did for me or my poems
When I was alive

I have this terrible feeling
That someone
After I am gone
You will swing into
Your usual
Rearguard action

So
Posthumously
In advance
Shove it up your arse

I met with a face I knew and challenged him, thinking it had been one of the Theatre musicians, and did enquire for a song of him, but finding it a mistake, and that it was a gentleman that comes sometimes to the office, I was much ashamed.

Increasingly worried that asking me to forecast Trump's use of tariffs is a bit like asking an aviation expert to predict the behaviour of a knife wielding pantsless man on the bus just because he happens to be raving about chem trails.

#Justread Unruly by David Mitchell. Think the Guardian summed it up best, describing it as “part Horrible Histories, part jolly romp guided by Alan Bennett’s view that history has no sense but is just one fucking thing after another”. Thumbs up from me.

Cast my ballot. It’s not a perfect system but, on balance, it’s much more preferable than a lot of the alternatives. On a side note, the kids art hanging up in St. Louis Primary School, Rathmines is particularly good! #GE2024
