The Spectral Poetics of Diana Khoi Nguyen: Ghost Of (2018), a Hauntological Reading
This paper examines the spectral dimensions of Diana Khoi Nguyen’s Ghost Of (2018), a poetry collection that employs the motif of the ghost to articulate mourning after the poet’s brother’s suicide. Using a hauntological framework, the paper analyses textual, structural, thematic, intertextual, and visual layers to propose a multifaceted reading of spectrality in contemporary poetry. Nguyen’s hybrid visual poems offer an exploration space that expands current theoretical understandings of spectral representation and widens the scope of research on the fantastic in poetry, an underexplored field. Ultimately, the analysis shows how Nguyen’s work challenges the threshold between the living and the dead, foregrounding the unstable ontology of reality, and how the author creates the “hesitant” atmosphere that characterises the fantastic.
