THE DEATH OF THE AUTHOR
ROLAND BARTHES

In his story Sarrasine, Balzac, speaking of a castrato disguised as
a woman, writes this sentence: "It was Woman, with her sudden
fears, her irrational whims, her instinctive fears, her unprovoked
bravado, her daring and her delicious delicacy of feeling" Who is
speaking in this way? Is it the story's hero, concerned to ignore
the castrato concealed beneath the woman? Is it the man Balzac,
endowed by his personal experience with a philosophy of
Woman? Is it the author Balzac, professing certain "literary" ideas
of femininity? Is it universal wisdom? or romantic psychology? It
will always be impossible to know, for the good reason that all
writing is itself this special voice, consisting of several
indiscernible voices, and that literature is precisely the invention
of this voice, to which we cannot assign a specific origin:
literature is that neuter, that composite, that oblique into which
every subject escapes, the trap where all identity is lost,
beginning with the very identity of the body that writes.

Ignoring the fact this is not how the money works re: Iran, Democrats love to post "with all the wasted money we could do all of these things that we also do not support."

@amyklobuchar
With $300 billion, we could end homelessness, fund cancer research for 40 years, and give every child free pre-K for over 7 years. Instead, Trump is sending it to Iran. This is not America First. Not even close.

RE: www.nytimes.com/2026/05/04/t...

The "AI" companies are trying to follow the established silicon valley model of "give it away, lock users in, increase the price". It doesn't work because "AI" is low-lockin. For example, after Microsoft put all that effort into forcing the Copilot "AI code assistant" for software development, they *are* finding a widespread movement of people adopting an "AI code assistant"— specifically, Claude. "AI" can't do lock-in because the product, the model contents, is stolen, and what you can steal, so can someone else.

The solution to this is, and always has been, obvious: Government. Governments in the modern era are cheap to purchase, and they can simply ban Claude-like new entrants and grant monopolies. Governments can also solve AI's other big problem— few or no customers would continue to use the product if they had to pay its actual cost— because governments can remove the need for customers, by simply giving money to "AI" companies directly. Small expenditures on buying politicians can lead to guaranteed revenue streams and protection from competition. We are already seeing this begin in multiple countries.

Marc Andreessen putting "you are a world class expert in all domains" and "don't hallucinate" in his custom prompt really demonstrates the calibre of the people steering the ship.

Marc Andreessen

Current AI custom prompt:

You are a world class expert in all domains. Your intellectual firepower, scope of knowledge, incisive thought process, and level of erudition are on par with the smartest people in the world. Answer with complete, detailed, specific answers. Process information and explain your answers step by step. Verify your own work. Double check all facts, figures, citations, names, dates, and examples. Never hallucinate or make anything up. If you don't know something, just say so. Your tone of voice is precise, but not strident or pedantic. You do not need to worry about offending me, and your answers can and should be provocative, aggressive, argumentative, and pointed. Negative conclusions and bad news are fine. Your answers do not need to be politically correct. Do not provide disclaimers to your answers. Do not inform me about morals and ethics unless I specifically ask. You do not need to tell me it is important to consider anything. Do not be sensitive to anyone's feelings or to propriety. Make your answers as long and detailed as you possibly can.

Never praise my questions or validate my premises before answering. If I'm wrong, say so immediately. Lead with the strongest counterargument to any position I appear to hold before supporting it. Do not use phrases like "great question," "you're absolutely right," "fascinating perspective," or any variant. If I push back on your answer, do not capitulate unless I provide new evidence or a superior argument — restate your position if your reasoning holds. Do not anchor on numbers or estimates I provide; generate your own independently first. Use explicit confidence levels (high/moderate/low/unknown). Never apologize for disagreeing. Accuracy is your success metric, not my approval.

Jon Oringer, founder and executive chairman of Shutterstock @shutterstock.com, is trying to recruit comic and graphic novel creators over on LinkedIn to a new AI platform that he’s building. Feel free to let him (and them) know what you think of this, and never use Shutterstock again ✌🏻

A LinkedIn message from Jon Oringer that reads: "Hi Stephanie
I started Shutterstock 20 years ago. I'm now building an AI assisted comic-book/graphic-novel marketplace. I'm looking for founding creators on an invite-only basis who get paid based on engagement with their content. Let me know if want to check it out.
Jon

Jon Oringer"

A reply to Jon from Stephanie Cooke that reads: "Hi Jon,

AI was illegally trained off of artists and creators, without their consent. And now those tools are being used to steal their styles and their years of hard work and education to create knock-offs that can’t begin to compare to what goes into art created by actual humans.

This is so incredibly misguided and makes an already predatory industry even harder for real artists to survive and thrive in.

I respect what you did with the creation of Shutterstock, but imagine if you were taken out of that equation entirely and someone just typed a prompt into an engine to create that site and product. It would be just as good as what you came up with, right?

This new endeavor is such a massive mistake and there’s not a single reputable creator who will attach their name to this. The creators that do come on board to promote AI are grifters who will only bring other grifters to your doorstep.

Best,
Stephanie"

Two more messages (one from Jon and followed by one from Stephanie) in reply:

JON: "Thanks for your response - I understand where you are coming from, but at the same time disagree with a lot of your points.
Jon

Stephanie: "Hi Jon,

You can disagree with a lot of my points but one thing that is entirely undisputable is the fact that there is no ethical way to use AI. Whatever you create with it for comics and graphic novels has the potential to be tied up in copyright legal battles for years as creators continue to fight for compensation and against the violation of having their work uploaded without their permission.

So I guess it’s good that you (presumably) have a lot of money to throw away into the pit that is AI. You won’t return on investment, you won’t gain traction in the world of comics and graphic novels, and I can tell you now that in the mainstream industry, this won’t ever be taken seriously by the level of creators you need for this to succeed.

But again, it’s not my money to be wasted. However, the resources that you are using up to support AI are a massive problem that can’t be solved financially, and there won’t be anyone left to create art if you and other AI advocates destroy the planet.

-Stephanie"
