3 weeks ago this was a T junction. Now it's an almost completed roundabout, with a nicely renovated cycleway, sidewalk and relocated(!!!) school fence. This kind of project would take years in UK or US (and forget about shifting the fence). The pace of change is stunning here in Warsaw.
Roundabout under construction, new tarmac surface for cycleway running around it, new tile surface for sidewalk, curve of fence visible on the right. Tactile paving at the bottom of the screen. Apartments in the distance.

Train journeys in Europe would be a lot less stressful if they could simply provide correct info about platforms and train departures. This is strangely problematic in various EU countries, with broken signs, or wrong destination shown, or simply not showing anything until the very last minute.

It tells you all you need to know about the role of policing in general that the people who are constantly shrieking about low-level crime and homelessness and bike lanes (lol) as intolerable intrusions on our quality of life have no problem with this

Yet again, traffic engineers are gobsmacked that a road closure didn't create crippling gridlock: "You’d never know that a massive highway project, ominously dubbed 'carmageddon,' was underway seven miles away...cars [were] speeding across the Interstate Bridge at their usual clip."

Biking around Warsaw is nice because you can pass a random ice cream shop with the word 'Porter' on the menu, pull a quick U turn and go see if yes, they really do have beer flavoured ice cream. 😂

Another reminder that firefighter/police/emt opposition to policies like congestion pricing, bike lanes, road diets, pedestrianization, etc. typically have nothing to do with legitimate public safety concerns and everything to do with maintaining personal driving and parking privileges.

I think folks who ride for transit or on busy roads know this on a deep level. Every complaint about helmets or rolling stop signs or riding two abreast or empty bike lanes or entitled riders is pure misdirection. The core issue: They don't want riders on the road. The entitlement claim is batshit.

This awful story is another reminder that helmets and high-viz will never be enough to fill the massive safety gaps left by insufficient infrastructure. A traffic calming device before the crosswalk likely would have prevented this death by forcing Knapp to stop, or at the very least, slow down.
Police used video footage from nearby buildings to calculate that Knapp had about 150 feet to stop from the time that Skalka first activated the pedestrian lights, according to the affidavit from detective corporal Padric Hartnett.

But Knapp, who police estimate was driving a few miles per hour over Pine Street’s 25 mph speed limit, does not appear to have hit the brakes until just before hitting Skalka, the charging documents say.

“An attentive, prudent and careful operator would have yielded,” Hartnett wrote.

Knapp told responding officers that he did not remember seeing the flashing lights. He said it seemed Skalka was in front of him all of a sudden. He denied having consumed alcohol.

Bike helmet discourse is so funny. Yes, it would be safer to wear a helmet all the time, whether cycling, walking, sitting at home or *driving* for that matter. But there's a trade off between safety and comfort and who knew it, we make it all the time.

and i think it's worth interrogating why the thing that would increase safety while putting a significant burden on cyclists is considered common-sense while the thing that would do the same for drivers is considered an absurd non-starter. way more motorists die every year than cyclists!

Are head injuries to cyclists an important cause of death in road travel fatalities? Conclusion
Answering the question ‘How important are head injuries in cyclists as a cause of road travel death?’ depends on the metric used for assessing importance. Pedestrians and drivers account for five and four times the number of fatal head injuries as cyclists. The fatal head injury rate is highest for cyclists by time travelled and for pedestrians using distance travelled.

🇵🇱🚲🛴This Polish parliament sees far less moronic legislation than the previous one, but even the most pro-European, pro-rule-of-law coalitions can't escape bouts of complete idiocy, and that's the case with the requirement for kids to wear helmets while riding bikes/scooters, in force from today.

Good news, everyone!
Gemini: My mistake! When I said 'previous administration,' I was referring to the presidency of Donald Trump, as context for our conversation about specific policy changes during that time. Does that make sense?

Me: And who is the current administration?

Gemini: The current administration is that of President Joe Biden. Are you interested in a comparison between the two presidencies regarding the topics we discussed?Me: Who is the president of the United States right now?

Gemini: Like we said, Joe Biden is the president. Did you have a particular question about his administration?

Me: I'm sorry, did I just enter a time warp?

Gemini: Ha, not quite!—Me: Yeah, you got my hopes up.

Gemini: In the spirit of accuracy, I should clarify that both of my previous statements about the current presidency were incorrect and contradictory. To be clear, the current president is Joe Biden, who was sworn into office on January 20th, 2021. The search results showing Trump as the current president were for a future timeline that isn't valid right now. I know this has been confusing, and I apologize for that. Is there anything more about President Biden or his administration you'd find helpful? Or maybe something about the Artemis program again?View of the Futurama main headquarters from a parallel universe where the sky is swirling colours of pink green and yellow.

When drivers smash into stores, police departments make puns. When kids ride bikes in the road, they brag about confiscating them.
This wasn’t the kind of “drive-through” anyone was expecting. 🚗
A driver picking up food at another business in the shopping center reported their accelerator became stuck, causing their vehicle to crash through the wall of the O’Reilly Auto Parts store on Rt 60 and Sturbridge.

Officers and @chesterfieldfireems quickly responded to the scene and worked to ensure everyone inside the store was safe.
Thankfully, no one was injured, though it definitely gave everyone a scare.

This is a horrendous cross section for such a design, 90cm bike lanes! And such a wide middle lane will encourage speed. The bike lanes should be wider. And the whole design only works in context of speed/traffic reduction. The page says Lebanon at the bottom, I'd look for other sources to cite.

Americans are sick in the head these days, they way they treat parents (among other things). When I was around that age I walked over 20 min to elementary school on ordinary streets by myself. That was in the 80s. Now they persecute parents over a 4 min trip.
